Bryan Mitchell RHP Mitchell will make his fourth start of the season, coming off a 4 2/3-inning effort at Boston in which he allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits. Mitchell hurled five scoreless innings vs. Toronto in his season debut, on Sept. 7. Jays Line-up... 1. Devon Travis ® 2B 2. Josh Donaldson ® 3B 3. Edwin Encarnacion ® 1B 4. Jose Bautista ® DH 5. Russell Martin ® C 6. Troy Tulowitzki ® SS 7. Michael Saunders (L) RF 8. Kevin Pillar ® CF 9. Ezequiel Carrera (L) LF On the bump... Francisco Liriano LHP The Blue Jays picked Liriano over knuckleballer R.A. Dickey for this start. Liriano secured his spot by allowing just four earned runs over his previous 12 1/3 innings. Game Notes The Blue Jays will try to strengthen their grip on an American League Wild Card spot while the Yankees attempt to keep their postseason dreams alive when the two teams meet to open a crucial four-game series on Friday night at what is certain to be a raucous Rogers Centre. The home fans for this set will be the same who, having caught postseason fever, traveled en masse to Seattle earlier this week for a big series against the Mariners. The Yankees, then, had better pack their earplugs. Toronto enters this series one game up on the top Wild Card spot, but with the race still extremely tight, there is little margin for error against a Yankees club that's three games out of the Wild Card picture and has been paced down the stretch by a historic slugging effort from rookie Gary Sanchez. Taking two of three at Tropicana Field this week, New York bounced back nicely from a tough four-game sweep by the Red Sox in Boston, but it will likely need a big series against the Blue Jays if the postseason is going to be a reality. "What we need to do is keep playing the way that we're playing now; keep playing hard, keep winning games," said Sanchez, who on Wednesday became the quickest player in history to hit 19 home runs, doing so in his 45th career game. Left-hander Francisco Liriano will take the mound for Toronto in the series opener, while the Yankees will counter with right-hander Bryan Mitchell. Liriano was chosen for this outing over knuckleballer R.A. Dickey after putting together a pair of strong starts in which he allowed four earned runs over 12 1/3 innings. "You definitely feel it more at the end of the season, because it's the end; you're staring at it," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of the final push. "I think it's kind of natural. There's no doubt there's a different feel at this time of the year with not a lot left." Mitchell joined the Yankees' rotation on Sept. 7 and tossed five scoreless innings against the Blue Jays, a start in which he allowed four hits and a pair of walks while also picking up a pair of strikeouts. He has not surpassed five innings in any of his three starts this season. The Yankees will play their final 11 games against teams currently in position to reach the postseason and with records above .500: Toronto, Boston and Baltimore. "We've had a tough week, but we have to keep having fun," said Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira, who is making his final regular-season trip to Toronto. "We've got to play relaxed and have fun. That's why we were winning so many games, because we were enjoying ourselves, playing one game at a time and just trying to have fun out there." Things to know about this game • Dickey likely will not start again for the Blue Jays unless Toronto finds itself playing a game that does not have consequences in the standings during the final series of the year, in Boston. The 41-year-old had an outside chance of being named a starter for this series, but the job instead went to Liriano following a pair of back-to-back quality starts. • New York's Billy Butler has the most career experience of anyone on the Yankees' roster vs. Liriano, but he has not enjoyed a lot of success. Butler is a .229 hitter with one homer and five RBIs in 35 at-bats vs. the veteran southpaw. Teixeira has five hits in 25 at-bats and is unlikely to start on Friday after being in the Yankees' lineup for all three games against the Rays. • Toronto leads the season series between these two teams, 9-6. The last time they met, the Yankees swept the Blue Jays in three games at Yankee Stadium, marking their first sweep of Toronto since June 17-19, 2014. baconpancakes Verified Member Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 outside of playoffs last fall, i dont remember a streak of games like this where every game is a must win. We need to pull within a few of the sox for that last 3 games. So do we buckle under pressure or fly and save gibbys job for another year?
sawyerford Verified Member Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 after a day off, bats is taking another day off rf. something up? although i would rather have zeke in lf. Bats should always take a off day in RF.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Lets Go Blue Jays!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 after a day off, bats is taking another day off rf. something up? although i would rather have zeke in lf. something up = Bautista is a terrible outfielder and Upton is slumping hard Pretty simple.
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Bats should always take a off day in RF. Zeke vs Not BJ, who is better at defense? Both their bats are irrelevant.
Lil Looper Verified Member Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 So its official the division is basically impossible at this point? That sucks because the last 3 are against the red sox but if we are too far out it wont matter

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Hopefully Lirano continues to throw the ball well tonight. Every game is basically a must win now. Not much margin for error.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Okay, it's f***ing lazy. I'm immune. I grew up with a dad who can't remember anyone's name. Not sure if it's a hearing thing or an attention thing. I just figured if I knew who is was talking about it didn't matter enough to keep correcting him because it was going to be the same thing tomorrow.

TheGrandslamMan Verified Member Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 The Las Vegas Gaming Commission seems to think that the Jays are gonna roll. Lines up to as high as -225 for the Jays at some books.

JFD Old-Timey Member Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Seattle was amazing! it's a shame they don't play there more often. Hopefully the boys feel refreshed after feeling all the positive vibes.
