gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 1. Bautista (RF) 2. Donaldson (3B) 3. Encarnacion (DH) 4. Martin © 5. Tulowitzki (SS) 6. Saunders (LF) 7. Pillar (CF) 8. Smoak (1B) 9. Travis (2B) Sanchez (13-2, 2.88 ERA) SP Travis batting ninth behind the likes of Smoak and Pillar is beyond anything that is logical in the universe. Let's take this f***ing series..
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 Travis should hit 7th. I actually prefer him down in the order and Bautista leading odd but doesn't really make sense for him to be hitting 9th. Glad to see Upton out of the lineup vs RHP.

I think the team is stronger with Upton and his defence in LF, opposed to having two pylons in the corners. Upton i think is coming around a bit vs RHP (2 hits vs Tanaka yesterday), while Smoak is just pure s*** with no speed and average defence.

Saunders breaking out of his s*** spell lets us finally try this platoon thing!

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 Lots of lineup discussion lately so here is our ideal lineup using fangraphs ROS projections and Upton instead of Smoak. 5.401 Donaldson Encarnacion Tulowitzki Bautista Saunders Pillar Travis Upton Martin

Upton also reached the short porch in RF last time we played there I think. I don't think Upton has played that well on D, but the corner OF is really bad with those 2.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 Martin is last due to lack of speed? I don't think speed has much to do with it. Martin projects as a league average bat with a high-ish OBP. Without checking I would assume Donaldson through Saunders project better (overall batting line, matchups aside), then I think it's more beneficial to a team to have the best hitter in the 7-9 portion hit last because he would then act as a second leadoff hitter of sorts for the elite top of the order once the lineup turns over. Edit: This is speculation based on what little I know about lineup optimization.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 I'll link this right here: http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2009/3/17/795946/optimizing-your-lineup-by Spots Six Through Nine The old-school book says the rest of the lineup should be written in based on decreasing talent. Hitting ninth is an insult. The Book basically agrees, with a caveat. Stolen bases are most valuable ahead of high-contact singles hitters, who are more likely to hit at the bottom of the lineup. So a base-stealing threat who doesn't deserve a spot higher in the lineup is optimized in the #6 hole, followed by the singles hitters.[/Quote] As the likely best projected baserunner on the team, this would explain Pillar (likely interchangeable with Upton) as the #6 hitter with Travis following right up.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 Pillar at 6? How can that be? I won't pretend to understand, but feel free to play around. I will note that if you switched Pillar and Martin, for example, it would be like .01 runs per game maybe. The top of the lineup leads to bigger changes. http://www.baseballmusings.com/cgi-bin/LineupAnalysis.py

Using their logic, I come up with something like this: Bautista (OBP) Donaldson (best hitter) Saunders/Tulo (4th best hitter) Encarnacion (best power hitter) Tulo/Saunders Martin Upton (best base runner?) Travis (good contact hitter) Pillar This changes based on how you project them. Maybe Travis is better than Martin, it just seems to fit better.
