The Buffalo Bisons scored in the ninth to take a one-run lead but couldn't hang on as Daniel Palka ended Friday's frenzy at Frontier Field with a two-run home run, giving the Red Wings the 4-2 victory.

A.J. Jimenez gave the Herd a short-lived 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth, driving in Dalton Pompey (pinch running for Chris Colabello) with a single through the right side of the infield.

However, Bo Schultz gave up a walk and a pair of singles in the home half of the frame, allowing the Wings to plate the tying run.

The hard-throwing closer was still on the hill in the 10th and followed up a leadoff single to Wilfredo Tovar with a pair of outs. Schultz was unable to get the third as Palka sent a 1-2 offering over the wall in right for the win.

In his 12th start for the Bisons this year, Casey Lawrence lasted a season-high 7.1 innings. The slender righty worked efficiently, needing just 57 pitches to get through the first five innings. With the game tied 1-1 and two men on in the sixth, Lawrence buckled down with back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the jam.

The 28-year finished with five K's, allowing one run on five hits.

Aaron Loup took over for Lawrence and laid waste to the heart of the Wings' lineup. The cross-firing reliever sat down Rochester's two, three and four batters in order - all on strikeouts.

Melky Mesa wasted no time with his opportunity to bat leadoff. The speedy outfielder took the first pitch of the game to the wall in right-center field for a triple.

Mesa crossed home a couple of batters later for the opening run of the night as Matt Dominguez grounded out to third.

BISONS NOTES:

Prior to Friday's festivities, Ryan Goins was recalled to the Blue Jays…Toronto optioned Darrell Ceciliani to the Herd as the corresponding move…Jesus Montero's 2-for-4 night extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Buffalo's designated continues to lead the IL in hits at 140…Now with 17 appearances pitched for the Herd this season, Aaron Loup has still not given up a home run…The Bisons fall to 2-6 in extra-inning games.

How the front office can a) give Smoak an extension and B) put him out there game after game while Montero sits in AAA, blows my f***ing mind.

I think Smoak blows the coaches and front office.

15% k-rate looks tantalizing right about now.

The idiots are going to wait for September to call-up Montero because they don't want to lose "value" by DFA'ing Smoak. It's a waste having Smoak on the bench in the playoffs, but it will happen if they wait until Sept to bring up Jesus.

He has a .130 ISO holy f***. This is the most annoying board fixation in so, so long.

They need to get Smoak out of the lineup. I'd probably rather have Carrera/Barney DHing over Smoak. See if we can get Eddy to play first a bit more.

People really underestimate just how bad Ezequiel Carrera really is. He sucks, don't let your vision of him be clouded by a few months of fluky unsustainable play, I understand that Smoak has been on a rampage of suck for some time now but please people, have some common sense before suggesting outrageous ideas.

How soon can we do this?

I'd put money on Montero being a complete waste of time.

In his last 130 plate appearances Smoak is hitting .153/.231 with 53 strike outs.

In his last 53 plate appearances he is hitting .122/.189 with 25 strikeouts. That's almost a 50% strike out rate.

Montero could hit .200 and it will be an upgrade. I'm not saying Montero is going to come here and tear it up, but at his worst he'll be an upgrade. And who knows, maybe he does tear it up here, he does still have potential, and he's on fire right now. Why not ride it while he's hot.

Who comes off the 40 man? They're not going to do this when there's 11 days left in August.

Take your pick. I know they won't do it now so close to September, but it should have been done a couple weeks ago. Even 11 days left how many more games is he going to be a negative factor in games.

Are people only looking at Montero's batting average?

Dude has walked 16 times in 439AB's this season.

Dude cannot play defence...anywhere really.

Dude needs another dude removed from the 40-man roster, and then replaced with a dude that gives you zero flexibility.

Dude does not have a place on this team.

I know people hate Smoak, but wake up. Smoak can take a walk...Smoak can give you competent defence at 1B. Smoak has more power than Montero. And, no, I'm not a Smoak supporter...but even I know he's more valuable than Montero for this team as it stands today.

Okay, with our recent injuries, a 6 man rotation, how does Montero fit in on the 25 man in any of that time frame... we run with a DH(Montero), a 1B/DH(Smoak), Thole C, and Barney as our IF/OF and run with 6 BP arms... you still haven't answered who comes off the 40?

I don't get it, am I missing something?

No. They are.

I'm heading down to Comerica park to catch the Redsox/Tigers game tonight. Then onto Cleveland to catch the Jays game tomorrow. Weather doesn't look good though :(
