The Rochester Red Wings scored three runs in the first inning and added another trio in the third, before rolling to a 10-4 win over the Buffalo Bisons at Coca-Cola Field Monday night.

 

Following his best start of the season, Scott Diamond was touched up for seven runs on 12 hits by the Red Wings. The left-hander fanned seven batters without issuing a walk over six innings of work, but couldn't stay out of hot water for most of the evening.

 

In five of the first six frames, at least five Rochester batters came to the plate, leading to a 7-1 Bisons' deficit by the time Diamond turned the ball over to the bullpen.

 

"Scotty wasn't on his game today. His curveball wasn't very sharp," said manager Gary Allenson post game.

 

"He had a good sharp curveball last time out and kept the fastball down and hit that outside corner pretty good five days ago, but that just wasn't happening today."

 

Buffalo's opening score came in the fourth inning on a solo shot from Matt Dominguez as the third baseman's 15th home run of the year was driven high into the screen in front of the I-190 ramp.

 

Chad Girodo came on to face Daniel Palka to begin the seventh and saw his second pitch sail onto the berm beyond the right-field wall. The Red Wings plated another on a pair of base hits to take a 9-1 lead into the home-half of the inning.

 

Adalberto Mejia cruised throughout most of his third start with Rochester, allowing just a run before running into trouble in the seventh. Casey Kotchman and Andy Burns both singled to start the inning and eventually came around to score on a two-out single by Dominguez.

 

Mejia finished with five K's to earn his first win in the Twins' system.

 

The Herd cut their deficit to 9-4 in the eighth as Chris Colabello singled and reached third on an error. Kotchman then plated Colabello by lofting a hit into shallow right field, his third single of the evening.

 

Aaron Loup alternated punch-outs with singles as he struck out the side in the eighth.

 

Matt Dermody gave up the tenth Rochester tally in the final frame on a couple of base hits and a sac fly.

 

BISONS NOTES:

Matt Dominguez's three runs batted in moves him to the top of Buffalo's RBI board at 57, two ahead of Jesus Montero…With a single in the second-inning, Montero extended his hit streak to seven games…Andy Burns' third-inning double was his 23rd two-bagger of the season, putting him one ahead of Domonic Brown for the team lead…The combined 30 hits ties a season-high in a game involving the Bisons.

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats kept right on rolling into Monday night's homestand opener at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium, securing a 4-1 win over the Binghamton Mets to improve to 10-3 in the month of August.

 

Wilmer Font (W, 3-0, 1.96 ERA) led the way, holding the B-Mets to three hits and one walk while racking up nine strikeouts in seven dominant innings. Murphy Smith finished off the final two frames out of the bullpen.

 

Christian Lopes went deep on the fourth pitch of Binghamton starter Tyler Herron's night, blasting a leadoff homer to left. He later singled in the third inning, marking his seventh-consecutive multi-hit game. Lopes also extended his career-best hitting streak to 13 games, and raised his average to .305.

 

New Hampshire extended the lead to 4-0 in the second inning with an RBI single from Dwight Smith, Jr., an RBI groundout from Richard Urena, and a run-scoring error off the bat of Lopes.

 

Rowdy Tellez and Ian Parmley each produced two-hit nights, as the Fisher Cats improved to 29-27 at home this season.

 

The week-long homestand continues on Tuesday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium, with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 6:05 p.m. The first 1,000 fans will receive a free autographed baseball, courtesy of the New Hampshire Liquor Commission, Div. of Enforcement.

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Drew Anderson racked up eight strikeouts in five strong innings, but Dunedin pulled away late on a Dickie Joe Thon three-run homer as Clearwater suffered a 4-1 loss to the Blue Jays on Monday night at Bright House Field.

 

Clearwater (30-20) now sits 3.5 games back of the first-place Blue Jays with 20 games remaining in the regular season.

 

Anderson (1-1) battled his way through five innings and limited the Blue Jays to just an unearned run on three hits. His eight strikeouts were one short of matching a career-high.

 

The lone blemish against him came in the fifth inning, after Jorge Flores reached on an error charged to third baseman Derek Campbell to open the frame.

 

Anderson struck out Aaron Attaway on a fastball, and DJ Davis grounded into a fielder's choice after a diving grab by Campbell at third. With two down, Anthony Alford got ahold of a 2-2 offering and drove a double to the gap in right-center, scoring Davis with the game's first run.

 

That unearned run was the first run permitted by the right-hander in four starts at Bright House Field. Anderson would exit after five innings having thrown 92 pitches, 61 for strikes.

 

Tom Windle took over in the sixth and dealt two perfect innings out of the bullpen. The lefty struck out two and retired all six men he faced.

 

Jon Harris (2-1) dominated for Dunedin, retiring each of the first 12 men to face him before Aaron Brown dropped down a bunt single to start the fifth inning. Chace Numata followed by chopping a single up the middle, but Harris induced a big strikeout and a pair of fly outs to get out of the inning unscathed.

 

Numata finished 1-for-4, extending his hit streak to 11 games while pushing his on-base streak to 14. The 11-game hit streak is tied for the second-longest by a Thresher this season, behind Andrew Pullin's 16-gamer.

 

After Thon's three-run homer put Dunedin up 4-0 in the eighth, Clearwater broke up the shutout in the bottom half.

 

Campbell was hit by a pitch with one out, and with two down Drew Stankiewicz worked a walk. Jiandido Tromp served a single into center to score Campbell, cutting the deficit to 4-1.

 

Harris would exit after matching a season-high with 7.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and a walk. Dusty Isaacs took it the rest of the way, striking out four of the five men he faced to record his fourth save.

 

Clearwater will head to Tampa for a doubleheader against the Yankees on Tuesday, with first pitch at 5 p.m. Brandon Leibrandt (1-1) takes the hill against Josh Rogers (8-4) in game one, while Ranfi Casimiro (8-8) faces off against Justus Sheffield (1-0) in game two. All the action will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com and the TuneIn app beginning at 4:45 p.m.

1) Wilmer Font: Font was excellent pitching 7 innings giving up only 3 hits and no earned runs while striking out 9.

 

2) Dickie Joe Thon: Thon went 2/3 with a home run and a walk, and a stolen base.

 

3) Jon Harris: Harris pitched 7.2 innings giving up only 3 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 5.

1) Scott Diamond: Diamond got torched for 7 earned runs and 12 hits in 6 innings pitched.

Indeed, have they changed something mechanically?

 

Not necessarily. The hit tool was what always carried him as a prospect but he finally seems to be coming around now.

4th most BB in the league.

6th most dingers.

Third in total bases.

 

Yes, I cherry picked those stats. But still! As good as anyone could have hoped so far.

Very promising start. Doesn't seem to be a complete disaster at third either.
