In Spring training, Edwin goes about his job quietly, says nothing to the press about his contract other than he won't negotiate mid-season, and it was never brought up again. He ends up having a great season and will get a big contract from someone. Bautista does the exact opposite, creates a distraction for no reason, says there won't be a negotiation as he told the club his number already (5/150), and he proceeds to have two DL stints, a bad season (by his standards), and a meme that will last a lifetime of him getting punched in the face. This is why you keep quiet, Jose. Didn't they ask him for a number and then leak the number to the media ???
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Not more yo-yo'ing with guys who have potential under the Shatkins regime I guess. I'm pretty pleased about it Barnes
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Does Bautista even turn down a QO at this point?
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Barnes lol he's like the 6th/7th man in the pen. All teams use guys with options the same way.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Does Bautista even turn down a QO at this point? Yes, because of pride.
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Does Bautista even turn down a QO at this point? I would. He doesn't have time to waste in a "prove it" season and he needs to cash in on a 4 year deal that gets him less annual salary then the QO value if its out there (I think he will get 4 years ~$60-70)

I don't know who the hell would offer him one right now though.

I don't know who the hell would offer him one right now though. Not to mention he'll probably only be looking at legit contenders too. Dude wants to win. Objectively, I think the Jays are a good fit for him as a DH/backup OF. Not the only good fit though, and there will obviously be emotional baggage dealing with the employer he was needling in the media this past offseason.
Lil Looper Verified Member Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 He really embraced his inner clowntista this offseason Ive said it before, the guy is very unlikeable UNLESS he is producing (i.e. OPS 900) But with his awful AWFUL defence, DL trips and weakened bat this year, in addition to bitching to umps and just having a huge ego he once again holding up his negative image. I really dont care about him anymore and would turn priority A to EE. Unless he signs for cheap (3/45 at most) he can f*** off. I also think if he had to sign a s*** deal he wouldn't even condition himself properly out of frustration and his ego. He needs to find ortiz's roid dealer and get on those fast or hes done in TO I think

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Do most really think Bautista won't get paid this offseason? Thinnest FA crop in years, a QO isn't going to stop somebody from giving him 3/60. Someone is going to look past the injuries and see an opportunity to buy low on a previously elite slugger who may still be elite.

Buy low on a 37 year DH with back/knee issues who didnt even OPS 800 in 80 games? Buy low for 20 mil on a 3 year deal? Ruben Amaro Jr that you?

Ruben Amaro Jr that you? Can't believe I'm responding to a known troll. Anyway, reading is pretty hard I know. I didn't say I would, but I do think someone will. I'd love to set his OPS O/U at 800 for next year, the loser leaving the board forever. However, you'd just create another account.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 I think its clear he's a DH moving forward but I don't the bat has declined nearly as much people think. His hard hit rate is actually higher than it was and he's making more contact with pitches in the zone. His value probably even increases as a DH considering how bad he's been in RF. I think I'd much rather have him back on a 1 year/$20 Million or 3 year deal and take the draft pick from Edwin than sign Edwin for 5 years.

"Junior Lake will get more complementary at-bats and we’ll reassess that on a daily basis. Dalton has a chance to be a star, we want to make sure his transition is a smooth one, and one that has as little volatility as possible." It looks like based on that quote, they are still high on Pompey, but seems like that the next time he is here, they want him here permanently. Can't really blame them there I guess.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Man, Bautista has really mangled his walk year. I never believed the $150M ask, but at this point, it might not even be half that.

I would take the "Dalton has a chance to be a star" statement with a grain of salt. It's probably a combination of pumping his ego/self confidence, since he appears to be mentally unstable, and saving his trade value. Does anyone realistically think Pompey has a chance to be a star at this point? If he becomes an average regular you take that and run.

I think he could be a .300 hitter who plays pretty good defense.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 I think there's a better chance that he re-signs now than there was at the beginning of the season. If Jose had a Bautista-like season, then someone would've given him a huge offer, not named the Jays. However, he's been pretty lousy this year and those suitors won't be knocking. And since there won't be any big offers (I don't think) out there, the Jays could conceivably offer something competitive as a 'Thank You...and we think you have more in you,' type of offer.
King Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 I think he could be a .300 hitter who plays pretty good defense. Of course you do.

Beltre didn't get paid that. Ortiz didn't get paid that. Are there any 35+ year olds in recent years who have gotten 3 for 60? There could be but I can't think of them. Beltran got 3 for 45 and he was coming off of a 131 wRC+ season. I'm not sure if he had a draft pick attached to him or not. Though he was a year older than Bautista will be entering next year.

However he was younger and coming off a better season.

Mods!! Drooling retards! Is that better? An elite walk rate is great, but his line still only adds up to a 114 wRC+. That's not the kind of hitter you can sink $20M+ per year into when it comes with atrocious defense and major age-related decline risk.

I agree the "star" comment is an exaggeration, but I still do believe they still like Pompey, but don't want him to get yo yo ed like last time.
