nmrch Verified Member Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Did you say the same about Grilli? The K-rate is still very strong and the velo is there. Much more potential than Storen. just because one reliever may have peformed a midseason turn around doesn't mean they all will. Its not like i don't want Benoit to succeed but it isn't just velocity, the guy is 39, there's other types of declines that you won't see in the velocity charts. I think people are overhyping the move though, he's gonna be used in extremely low leverage situations, won't swing the pendulum one way or the other, its mean to be a minor move.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Grilli with ATL picking up the tab (+affordable team option for 2017). Upton with SD picking up $17m of the $22m he has left on his deal (controllable through 2017). Benoit for Storen likely in a salary neutral trade (I'm guessing Jays are paying the difference in $ to even it out) I'm liking these moves.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Colabello Lol Valencia would have been a better shout!

Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Isn't that JP Riccardi? Him and Bautista were both from the Riccardi era He was DFA'd by AA, picked up by Oakland, placed on waivers and picked up again.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Edwin Encarnacion. We lost Encarnacion on waivers, but signed him as a free agent.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 He was DFA'd by AA, picked up by Oakland, placed on waivers and picked up again. So AA tried to get rid of him that doesn't count!!!
King Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2016 Author Posted July 27, 2016 Lol Valencia would have been a better shout! We never claimed him off waivers though. We traded for him, for Liam Hendriks and Erik Kratz. Then re-acquired Hendriks in the offseason for Santiago Nessy (minor league catcher). Colabello was a great bat last season even though this year has obviously been a disaster, it was definitely a good waiver claim.
Cyborg Verified Member Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Isn't that JP Riccardi? Him and Bautista were both from the Riccardi era Nope. The trade was JP but not the waiver claim lol. Actually Grant is right he cleared and we signed him.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Benoit's velocity is still there. I prefer him.
nmrch Verified Member Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Elaborate simple command? The walks were up a bit last year too and they're obviously THE issue now, you don't think it could be an age related decline?
Inklink Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Soon the jays will be the oldest team in baseball Gotta make the most of this window of opportchewnity.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 simple command? The walks were up a bit last year too and they're obviously THE issue now, you don't think it could be an age related decline. How many times have you seen pitch this year?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 What does swapping relievers have to do with those two? Storen was on his way out, opening a spot on the 25 man. A 7 man relief corps is possible. With acquisition of Upton and Benoit, there is no room for GoGo or the 'shroom
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 lol @ this thread. Two ageing, struggling relief pitchers with identical salaries. Determining which one will be more valuable over the next 20 innings is pretty much the closest thing you get to a coin flip in baseball. Calling this a great move seems like a bit much.
nmrch Verified Member Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 How many times have you seen pitch this year? holy crap, i've said some crazy things in the past but people are actually jumping on me for suggesting a 39 year old reliever might not turn it around. How is that controversial at all?
gbill2004 Verified Member Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 GBill, we need a Drew Storen appreciation thread. I tried but looks like a f***face moderator keeps deleting it.

A little control gain and he could be elite again. well lets hope so, as a fan i would obviously be happy with that but do you think its crazy to think that the command might be a real age related decline and not just the variance we see with relievers?

Exactly, praising Shapiro for this is just silly. If this was AA everyone would be saying "Why the f*** do we keep picking up other teams' garbage?"
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 It's Benoit's birthday today!

Determining which one will be more valuable over the next 20 innings is pretty much the closest thing you get to a coin flip in baseball. Calling this a great move seems like a bit much. Seeing that Storen has already been DFA'd, it's a fine move. Benoit hasn't seen the big drop in velocity and has a better track record, so I like his chances a bit more.

For sure no doubting that best pick up but what I'm saying is his good pickups to claims ratio is bad. And he didn't do a lot of midseason small deals. These guys might best him for making small tweaks

Gun to my head I probably take Benoit ROS, but it seems really close.

If this was AA everyone would be saying "Why the f*** do we keep picking up other teams' garbage?" How long has Benoit been garbage? I didn't like the cut of Storen, but if this is the consolation, I'm happy. Yesterday folk thought we weren't catching a whiff of a player. Smarten up ju1ced.

Plus if he's really good we have an option on him
