you don't give up anything for players from the scrap heap. I confess to not knowing anything about Rodriguez, but he's only 19 and doesn't have enough of a history of failure to be discounted completely. So he's a lottery ticket and even that to me is too much to give up for a bum like Upton

This trade makes that extension look even more weird now I agree. But he could have a role next year with all of our free agents. They must just think Smoak is acceptable as a starter should they whiff in the offseason. But if they can find an upgrade paying Smoak 4.25 million to be a bench player is a role they find acceptable at that price as well.

I don't understand why you seem to expect that a guy who's put up 3 fWAR over 600 PA the last two years is going to come with no investment. 5M and a guy who wouldn't likely be in most people's team top-30 prospects is a very small price to pay for someone who has looked like a league average player for two years now.
