You can probably find a similar or better platoon 1B cheaper in the offseason and I'm certainly sure without a two-year commitment attached.

I can't disagree.

They didn't need to do this Smoak deal now. They could have felt out the market in the offseason first.

So with this signing can we expect the following walks.

Saunders

EE

Joey

Cecil

Storen

I think they'll sign Saunders and Cecil.

Smoak can easily be benched or traded or whatever at that salary. It's what the Rays gave LoMo. It's the going rate for a platoon 1B. Doesn't block anybody or impede any future moves.

I don't question the move. Just don't understand the timing especially since casuals and media will jump to stupid conclusions about what it means. I guess this is the good thing about Atkins and Shapiro being so open, it limits the speculation from the media. Fans of course will read s*** into everything regardless.

Well I was born in 1988 so I missed their heyday so if that is the case I am glad I get to see them, and to anyone that saw them when they were on top of the world, I envy you.

GNR as a Band is Highly Highly overrated !!!

I can't be the only one that would Love to punch Axel Rose in his Whinney ass face!!!

I feel sorry for AC/DC fans that had to suffer though shows he sang in!!!

What was AC/DC thinking, fellow country man Jimmy Barnes would have been the better choice even!!!

This contract resembles what's going in the NBA this summer, i don't understand on what planet a replacement(or sub replacement) level player even needs a contract let alone one for $4 million a year. Its disgustingly stupid, i get that its not really a big deal but its so disappointing to see Atkins do something so obviously wrong headed.

Funny enough, that's music to my ears. I hate the idea of loading up on pending free agents at the trade deadline.

I'm with you but I'm hoping they can pull a guy under contract, a guy like Upton should be cheap and a good add here. I don't mind taking a reliever or two entering their FA year though tbh

Q: It wouldn’t change the amount of money spent?

Shapiro: It would change the amount of spent to 15 million dollars a year. What does that buy you in free agency? Very little. One and a half wins.

Q: How is that figure determined?

Shapiro: Our analysts can put a value on what it costs in free agency to sign a player and what that means in Wins Above Replacement and what those players end up costing in free agency and that changes every year. They measure all the players signed in free agency and what their history has been and what they offer going forward and they place a value. The challenge in free agency is you’re often paying for that in the first year of a contract, and in the out years of a contract the players WAR usually goes down because he’s usually past his prime. So it becomes a less efficient contract over time. That’s why free agency is never the best way to build. It’s a good way to supplement but not build.

Q: So $8 million for one win?

Shapiro: It’s $9 (million) now. It was $8 (million) two yeas ago. I think at the end of this year they figured out it was nine. And when those wins come in the win curve are important. What does that win mean if it’s the difference between 80 and 81? Very little. But if that win’s the difference between 89 and 90, that could be a meaningful win.

Q: Aren’t there certain players though that could be worth more than that? The right guy and the right fit could mean more than that?

Shapiro: I think there are certain players at certain positions that might be able to leverage impact on other players. Like a catcher for sure. Maybe a leadership component. More than stats alone. We factor those things in. There are certain subjective roles to what certain guys bring to the table beyond just the objective analysis of ‘this is what their added value is.’

But you have to find some way to place a value on what guys bring to the table. We don’t use those conventional stats. We use our own methodology. It does factor subjective and scouting information and makeup and personality and character and all those things in. In the end you’re adding up and trying to determine how many wins that player impacts when you bring him on board. That’s what you’re trying to figure out.

If he values a win at that much money why give away money to replacement players like Smoak?

oh please, lets not make excuses for "our guy". A stupid decision is a stupid decision. There is no justifiable reason to ever offer a bum like Smoak a guaranteed contract let alone one for 4 million a year. I don't care if he rescues kittens from trees during his off days or has Lincoln level leadership qualities, this was a stupid thing to do.

Well he said 9m is for 1 win and he gave Smoak 4.5 so he looks at him as a half-war player then, no?

Smoak was 0.6 WAR for 328 PA in 2015. He has slumped lately but let's see where he is at when 2016n is over.

He also rode the bench for lengthy periods of time when Colabello played. And as far as we know, he never complained.

It's not that bad of a contract. And we know the potential to bust out like a Trumbo is there.

How does Smoak project if he only faces RHP

ball parking it, maybe around 105-110 wRC+ or in other words not good for a platoon player with no defensive value.

It's not SKY is falling bad either!!!

It's is what it is, nothing more really!!!

We have two thirds of a outfield to replace that will be of bigger concern

In the offseason for this team!!!

Who out there in free agency would sign for less then him and give us better production also???

Well you're free to cherry pick stats with arbitrary cutoffs but here's the bottom line, Smoak has a career war of 0.5 in 2800 PA's, that's 4 and half full time seasons worth. He's a few months away from turning 30, if you think this is a guy worthy of an investment then lets agree to disagree.

edit: and i don't get the Mark Trumbo thing at all, he's had 3 league average seasons before. Actually, he's only been bad for one season. Before this year Trumbo's career numbers were considerably better.

Smoak isnt a baseball name.

1 WIN = 600 PA

Smoak doesn't deserve 300 PA

On a side note, anyone going to the GNR concert tonight?

I'm going to see them Tuesday in Boston. Pumped.

There is no substance to this post.

There actually is when you suggest that Smoak can be a consistent 125 wRC+ bat. Secondly, you seriously suggested if Smoak could play LF or 3B. What the holy f*** are you talking about?

he got $3.90m this year. he gets a very minor raise to $4.25m the next 2 seasons. i dont read to much into projecting a bigger role for him, just that they really like him in the role he has now and dont want to mess with it.

i do agree why pay smoak now when you can just play it by ear and no doubt get the same deal later on?

I remember the GNR riot here in the st louis area back in 1991 when axl jumped into the crowd to go after a guy who wouldn't put his camera away during the middle of their concert. Then he stormed off stage instead of finishing the rest of their songs, and the crowd became mayhem.

Perhaps Shitkins believes that there will be an psychological uptick from Job Security

Lol, then they're in the wrong profession.

"Let's see if we can get Justin in a better head space by giving him $8.5mil. He's a switch hitter with power while playing a decent first base and I can't help seeing a white version of Eddie Murray in him. He's worth the investment.''
