Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 I don't see the hurry to extend Smoak at all.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Well well...wasn't expecting that.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Projections have him at ~95 wRC+. I don't really understand the desire to have that taking up space for the next two years.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 1B with average bat is the new market inefficiency. Goodbye Edwin, and welcome draft pick.
Horses Fart Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 We gonna eat dick without Edwin. :-(
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Not a Smoak hater but don't understand this for an under league avg bat with a high K% at that pos in this Div.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 he'll reach his potential... eventually -shapiro
Hipfan Verified Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Seems excessive for what he is. I was hoping the Jays would improve at 1B this offseason, guess they are focusing on other priorities?
flafson Verified Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Maybe they're afraid to be bunched into a corner by having all your sluggers as potential free agents at the same time? Still seem odd.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 He does Appear better when batting in the Four or six hole, so there is that!!! Plus his playing time may bring more consistency to his overall game, if that can be seen as a plus side!!! Plus Saunders is going to need rest days as well !!! Lol And we do need someone to play there next year.
nextyear Verified Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 I think this contract extension will work out well for the Blue Jays. Last night Justin Smoak easily slapped a ball to the opposite field with the A's shifting him to pull - if Smoak can continue this approach when required, then he has shown with 100 home runs in 780 plate appearances that he has power - http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=9054&position=1B . I think with a slight change in approach, like he showed last night, that he can consistently be a wRC+ 125 player who is also a good defender at 1B. I wonder if Smoak could play another position when required, such as 3B or LF? Looking at his past MLB history, he has only played 1B. If he can only play 1B then that is a limitation, however he will have good trade value to some teams in the future if he can get his hit production up.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Literally the last guy on the team I cared about them re-signing Damn.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 I guess there's no EE next year That or they hope Smoak can accumulate some value this year and they can trade him.
King Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Author Posted July 16, 2016 Literally the last guy on the team I cared about them re-signing Damn. Josh Thole 3 years extension next
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 This is a good deal if he pans out--I mean, despite the low average and K issues, he's also getting on base a lot (.333 OBP). Many teams would've likely offered him quite a bit of money in this awful free agent market lacking in depth.. Next up, the Jays need to lock up Saunders and one of EE/Bautista.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Literally the last guy on the team I cared about them re-signing Damn. He's probably the most boring regular on the team. He's been here almost two full years, but does anyone actually give half a s*** about Justin Smoak? He just kind of takes up space.

Belliss101 Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 This makes zero sense to me. Oh well.

He need to cut down on Ks I can't stand seeing him on the plate and striking out literally 30% of the time. This is too much, especially on this team that preaches patience at the plate. Throw him a breaking ball in the dirt and its for sure a K
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Maybe Martin has asked to move to first next year!!! 😛
Cyborg Verified Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Don't really see the point of doing it right now, but it's okay I guess.
nextyear Verified Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 lol There is no substance to this post.
