Boston media is probably the worst group in the entire league. At least Toronto's are just harmlessly stupid, but the guys in Boston are huge homers, extremely rough on their own players, gossipy, and they love to tamper with other teams.

Here's the truth....

 

Players, agents, GM's, coaches, managers.....anyone....ANYONE...can say whatever they want to anyone. They can...AND DO try to convince each other to sign here, there, wherever...GM's are always talking to agents and dropping hints, ideas, talking numbers. That happens. There is no doubt. And no one gives a s***...unless the media gets wind of it. If you can keep it on the down low, you're fine.

 

Ortiz's only mistake was saying it in front of the wrong people.

It's the same as players having deals all lined up before the draft or the IFA signing period. It's all worked out way beforehand in many cases. Edwin knows what teams would be interested in him and has a range of salaries that he can expect from each given team. At least as a general framework. That changes based on performance, supply and demand (who signs where, and who's left desperate). Ortiz saying that he thinks EE would be a great replacement for him is not news...to anyone. I'm sure he mentioned this to Edwin 3 years ago in private.

Price has been as good as he's always been this year, IMO. Sometimes guys just get unlucky with where their batted balls go (in his case, over the fence).

Price is leading the AL in xFIP, 4th in FIP, and even his ERA is top 30 despite the high babip and hr/9. I don't get how some people say Price isn't worth it, hes among the top pitchers in the game during a 'down' year

David Ortiz's public comments on his preferred replacement may have gotten him in a bit of trouble with Major League Baseball.

 

The league is reportedly expected to look into the Boston Red Sox slugger's post-All-Star Game comments where he openly lobbied for Toronto Blue Jays designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion to join the Red Sox next season for possible tampering, according to Sportsnet 590 The Fan's Jeff Blair.

 

"The Red Sox know also they need to bring a force in the middle of the lineup (after I retire),'' the 40-year-old told reporters on Tuesday. "And sorry, Blue Jays, but who better than Encarnacion to do that?''

 

Players are subject to discipline if they violate baseball's tampering rules just like team executives, Blair noted.

 

Ortiz also suggested the Red Sox acquire Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez.

IMHO....this was a BIG EFFFFF - UUUUU to MLB again by the BoSox, who think they are above mundane things like rules.

 

Perhaps anytime team management/player tampers like this it would be great if MLB can rule that "that specific team is banned from

signing that player". Of course this would never get past the collective bargaining process!

Still, you're not allowed to discuss the acquisition of players under contract to other teams, and so that behaviour needs to be nipped in the bud.

 

I do agree that they shouldn't do it but some people in this thread are overreacting. While sending Ortiz a letter is pretty dumb it's pointless to fine them cause they don't really care about $5000. He said what he said not much else you can do.
