HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 I'm glad he isn't taking s*** down the middle. It was silly that lasted as long as it did.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2016 Author Posted July 5, 2016 Seems like Tulo finally switched to a lighter bat. Singles all day with the occasional homerun... But at least he can actually hit a fastball now. wat He's been crushing mammoth home runs since he came off the DL.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 wat He's been crushing mammoth home runs since he came off the DL. There was an article on fangraphs recently explaining that Tulo may have been slumping due to a decline in batspeed. The remedy was to have him swing a lighter bat and sacrifice some power. Some people noted that Tulo has been trying different bats over the last couple months.

You wouldn't necessarily sacrifice power just because you switched to a lighter bat. Force = mass x acceleration. You can accelerate a lighter bat faster than a heavier one. If you can swing a 40 ounce bat at 80 MPH and 32 ounce bat at 100 MPH, the force exerted is the same. If switching to a lighter bat means he can catch up to fastballs, then that's great, but it doesn't necessarily mean he's going to hit for less power.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 I absolutely love watching Tulo mash. With EE and Bats gone at the end of the year - we're going to need him to be the 130+ wRC+ hitter in the middle of this order. I acknowledge the risk of $90M in a 32 year old player - but I'm not sure we're going to have the luxury of trading his bat out of the lineup (assuming it's primarily a salary dump). No idea what's going to happen - but in the meantime, I'm going to simply sit back and enjoy this beautiful baseball player.
mikebel111 Verified Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Tulo is hitting .313 in his last 29 games. With 8 homers and 24 RBI. Looks like he is back to being the Tulo we thought we were getting in the trade. 4 more years of Tulo! Lol at people wanting to trade him. Not going to happen and not should it. Thankfully we have smarter people at management.

That really isn't much money relative to the market.
West Texas Forever Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 I still can't believe people thought a career .300 hitter at the age of 31 was going to fall off the face of the Earth, Jays fans are so stupid sometimes.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 (edited) Not going to fall into the trap of thinking a 29 game hot streak means Tulo is going to be good for the rest of his contract. The risk of an injury plagued Tulo becoming a 2 WAR or less player is high. With a barren farm and aging team, after this year the Jays are going to be back to being a .500 club and potentially worse. Even if Tulo gives 3-4 WAR, it will be meaningless on a .500 club. You move Tulo for prospects if you can in the offseason. Can't believe this but I agree with BTS. Edited July 5, 2016 by Jimcanuck
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 I'm more enthusiastic about our chances in 2017 than most We still have 4/5 starters coming back making only about 30M combined, a cost controlled MVP, a cheap GG CF, and massive attendance that MIGHT allow us to afford to keep Bautista or Encarnacion and add a SP. Yes, Martin and Tulo will have some years later on that are ugly compared to $. But I believe this team's window isn't necessarily over after 2016 the way many do.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Said on here last year that Tulo looked really unhappy. Even earlier this season nothing seemed to be changing, and I basically gave up on him. Now! What a transformation,it's amazing what happiness can bring. Keep it going big guy,I'm back on board. Maybe he looked unhappy cause he was hitting like s***. And now he's happy cause he's not hitting like s***.

Reyes always relied on speed. Speed is the first thing to decline. He's technically still a .280 hitter though. Reyes' defense became sloppy and that was more of a problem than the hitting. Tulo is a far better player.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 Missed the gm last night but watched Jays in 30 when I got home. Tulo hit that bomb on a high and tight pitch that reminded me of the HR in his first gm as a Jay. Our Board (me included) can be so reactionary. Our threads in the first 6-8 were the narrative that Martin and Tulo might both be done and know we are fapping about Tulo again. I think most of us thought he could be better again (because he was pretty bad), but he looks like old Tulo right now and I'm lovin' it. He is dangerous. wRC+ 107. What a boost with Jose out. Not to mention Zeke with a HR and 2B last night. 1.2 WAR. Same as Tulo.

fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 Amazing to see our offence click like this, seeing Tulo play like this makes me jump up and down like this is so exciting, I grew up seeing Tulo as the best shortstop in the majors and seeing him on all the highlight reals and s***, but seeing him do this with our team feels nostalgic!!!!!!!! Love this pickup from last year

The injury for Tulo is the best thing that happened to him. He was just starting to swing it, so when he went down he probably practiced what worked before his injury and look at the results. Before he was looking for a certain pitch, now it's literally see ball hit ball, which is really good for him because he has an above average eye

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 Gibby says BTS can suck it a little bit Normal fans fap over their team winning or good player performance. BTS faps over the possibility that veterans with large contracts can be dumped for nothing in the off-season. Because, you know, finding replacements at scarce positions like SS and C who will provide more production than Tulowitzki and Martin at a cheaper cost is going to be so0o0o0o0o easy to do given that the Jays have no immediate replacements waiting on the farm, no assets available to trade that won't create a hole somewhere else and that the 2017 free agent list is decent only because so many Toronto guys are on it.

Because they're clearly struggling to generate runs without Joey's 0.8 WAR in the lineup. Jays will resign Edwin, get much better D in RF than Joey and get a nice draft pick when he walks. There's no reason the Jays can't compete in 2017. Don't be dumn.
