vic city Verified Member Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 I'm not an advanced stats guy, but EE has been raking lately and now leads the league in RBI. GMs are generally against giving big money long term contracts out to DHs. A lot of posters on this board were against giving him more than 2 years. But his performance this year has been very good. Has EEs performance to date changed your mind? What do you think it will take to get him re-signed? He clearly wants to stay in TO. Thoughts?
sdyment Verified Member Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 .817 ops over 281 ab's and a questionable war... But those rbi's ^^ Sorry...sounds very rude. Not my intention. Regardless, the money and term that EE was asking for...no chance. Two years still sounds about right for EE and JB. I don't think that gets it done, so really it comes down to their desire to get paid or stay in T.O.
vic city Verified Member Posted June 14, 2016 Author Posted June 14, 2016 OK OPS isn't great, fair enough. But you can't completely discredit a guy that's one of the best run producers in baseball because his OPS isn't elite.
vic city Verified Member Posted June 14, 2016 Author Posted June 14, 2016 I guess the question is would you go 3 years? 2 isn't going to get it done.
baseballsss Verified Member Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 Personally let him and Bautista walk and take the picks.. This team is aging and EE doesn't even play the field half the time.

How about wait until the season ends and we have a full view of what EE is. His numbers are climbing rapidly.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 I would take whichever of he or Bautista comes cheaper and/or signs first. We only need one DH next year, but I also don't feel very good about heading into 2017 with JD being our only reliable above average hitter.

I apologize about my comment the other day, I was lit, and deleted it.
baseballsss Verified Member Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 How do you know? Well it is a good chance that it doesn't unless it a higher Average annual salary I would suspect. This is EE last chance to get that huge paid day, he will milk as much as he can.

He can't ask for much more, and his final body of work will determine what he's capable of. We'll have to wait and see.

As much as Jose says he is still an outfielder he is a 1B/DH next year likely. The ball Carerra caught on Sunday i have a feeling Bau would not even be close to it. Who ever comes cheaper this off season would be the one i take.
vic city Verified Member Posted June 14, 2016 Author Posted June 14, 2016 If Ortiz does in fact retire then Boston could be a serious player for EE.

Bautista's range has declined, and that's to be expected. More problematic, for me, is that his arm went from above average to god-awful, literally overnight. Ever since that Delmon Young backpick attempt at 1B, his throwing shoulder has been f***ed up, and folks, it's not going to get any better. Everybody runs on him now, and it's become a legitimate problem. Thankfully it hasn't been a major detriment to his hitting. I suspect he has a partial tear in there that he'll probably just play out his career with, because the carry on his throws has fallen off a cliff since that day.

But you can't completely discredit a guy that's one of the best run producers in baseball because his OPS isn't elite. It's true we can't COMPLETELY discredit the RBI's - but we almost can and should. EE's a streaky hitter and it looks like he's about to get white hot for a few weeks - which he needs to get his offensive numbers back up into the elite department. That said, his contact numbers continue to suggest he's declining. In the end, I think it's too early to judge.

He was hitting under .200 with RISP and getting those RBIs with a 100 ish wRC+. Lets see where he ends up. He is the type of hitter who could stay hot for half a season and get back to the 150 wRC+ elite hitter he has been for us. In which case, he gonna get paid. If he doesn't, there will be lots of talk about aging curves and his decline and all the associated risks = cheaper. p.s Even freakish Papi isn't a 200 wRC+ hitter and I'm calling a tough 2nd half for him.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 it never changed i've been calling for sign EE, let Bautista walk for several months now
BTS Community Moderator Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 I sure wouldn't want to make the call on either of them. Edwin is hot right now, but the K-rate is still up almost 5%, which is scary on a long- term deal for a DH. Bautista is still very good, but has become a liability in the field and his offense is down a bit. Ugh, both guys are still good. Both are in their mid-30s and starting to show it. Both want expensive long-term deals. We have no internal replacement for either. That's why Shatkins gets paid the big bucks.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 While we are on the topic of extensions, what would you do with Saunders? Take the pick and run or try to sign him to a 2 or 3 year deal to be LF/DH? He's a really good LH bat which the Blue Jays don't have at all next year.

In the end, I think it's too early to judge. he's not a streaky hitter. streaky hitters get hold and cold several times throughout the season. Edwin generally starts out cold and then rakes after the first month or two. at this point i just assume it has something to do with the weather heating up because its the same script every year.
crazy47larry Verified Member Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 i have said it many times but i think Edwin ages better than Bautista. I think they are both DH's and I think people take for granted Bautista's ability to just jump right in and play 1B. I dont expect Bautista to give as much of a discount as Edwin based on his comments throughout the start of the season. I think we get a better future hitter and a better contract with Edwin. Still lots of variables until signing time though. The more I think about it the more I like just waiting it out.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2016 Posted June 14, 2016 I like Brandon Moss as a potential replacement for the DH/1B spot next year. He's a lefty bat with some good power and he shouldn't get paid too much. I'd let Bautista and Edwin go, take the draft picks, and sign Moss and/or Reddick. EDIT: and hope that Tulo gets back to being at least a 125 wRC+ hitter
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
