jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 (edited) Pitching matchup: Aaron Sanchez (3.33 FIP) vs Jake Peavy (4.97 FIP) Opposing pitching notes: - Peavy has an ugly 9.00 ERA but probably has not been as terrible as one would seem. The 4.74 xFIP is ugly, but his peripherals are about the same as last year when he was not good, but passable. His SwSt% is also way up at 12.6%. Peavy has a .414 BABIP so far this year....we should see the ERA come down in the mid to high 4 range soon enough. Home pitching Notes: Enough has been debated about Sanchez on the board so no further comments. Giants lineup: CF Denard Span (L) 2B Joe Panik (L) 3B Matt Duffy ® 1B Brandon Belt (L) RF Hunter Pence ® SS B. Crawford (L) LF Gregor Blanco (L) C Trevor Brown ® P Jake Peavy ® Bluejays lineup: CF Kevin Pillar ® 3B Josh Donaldson ® RF Jose Bautista ® 1B E. Encarnacion ® LF M. Saunders (L) SS Troy Tulowitzki ® C Russell Martin ® 2B Ryan Goins (L) P Aaron Sanchez ® Game notes: - According to my made up projection system the Bluejays have a 59.7% chance to win this game. Weather: Decent with the wind blowing 11 MPH out (actually didn't make that up...go me) Prediction: San fran is a very pitcher friendly park but i think we still see some runs scored in this game. Giants will be rocking 5 left handed bats and i think even though Peavy has been unlucky he still kinda sucks. Jays win 6-4. Edited May 10, 2016 by o2cui2i
bronson44 Verified Member Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 So Pillar back to being full-time lead off?
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 So Pillar back to being full-time lead off? Nah.. I think because the game is in a NL park and losing the DH, Saunders hitting fifth provides valuable protection for EE. I like the move.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 my daughter is home for the next 10 days. I wont be up to watch the 4:15am starts. Hope the games are good so I can enjoy them in the morning. good luck peeps. Go Blue Jays!!!

I like the move. I understand having a LH bat in the middle of the lineup but this protection BS needs to stop.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 Even if this "protection" myth was plausible, Saunders certainly wouldn't qualify to protect Edwin. If anything, late in the game it would just mean pitching Edwin even more carefully and the bringing on a lefty reliever. Batters are "protected" by getting runners on base in front of them far more than anyone hitting behind them.

So what you're saying is that if Thole or Goins were hitting fifth instead of Saunders, it wouldn't make a difference on how EE is pitched? GTFOOH
Cyborg Verified Member Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 The hilarious thing is that getting pitched around increases the players value. No batter is better than a walk.
bronson44 Verified Member Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 Gregor Chisholm @gregorMLB 21m21 minutes ago Sounds like Floyd and Chavez are going to start being used in more high leverage situations. Gibbons strongly hinted as much. #BlueJays

So what you're saying is that if Thole or Goins were hitting fifth instead of Saunders, it wouldn't make a difference on how EE is pitched? GTFOOH I know you'd love for Goins to hit 5th but no point in going through these hypothetical situations that would never happen. If Pillar and Saunders were switched I doubt you'd see any difference.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 The hilarious thing is that getting pitched around increases the players value. No batter is better than a walk. True but this doesn't always necessarily equate to wins, which is more important than a player's individual value. You want your clean up hitter getting more pitches in the zone to hit rather than being pitched around. Let's be honest, if Tulo or Smoak were batting fifth (vs a RHP) instead of Saunders, you would have to assume that EE over the course of the game will see a few more hittable pitches. Let's see how it plays out..

BUT obviously Thole shouldnt hit 5th just to get walks for EE as then youre giving Thole more atbats than someone else.

Governator Community Moderator Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 I know Gibbons would never do this but perhaps Smoak over EE against righties this series would be a decent option? Smoak's one of our best on base guys right now and has the Cola magic working for him.

Governator Community Moderator Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 Get some splash homeruns into the bay for the win. Pretty sure Smoak has a better chance to hit one out there to right field.
