Donaldson: "Some people need to evaluate their approach"

That's too bad. I was grade-A excited when I heard Troy Tulowitzki was becoming a Blue Jay. Just thinking about a Donaldson/Bautista/Encarnacion/Tulowitzki lineup had me giddy as a little child at Christmas. But I tell ya, I have not been impressed. Not one bit.

 

I suppose the Rockies wouldn't have had any intention of shipping their face of the franchise star player outta town unless they knew something was majorly wrong with him.

 

Someone OTB pointed out a while back that he has a similar injury to what Votto had and it took Votto a while to start producing like his old self again. There's reason to think that a) he's not quite himself and he's been pressing as a response to this and that's compounding the problem. There are reasons for cautious optimism and patience.

I don't get a chance to watch quite as many National League games as I'd like, but how much of Tulo's success do you guys think was as a result of playing in Coors Field? Countless power guys who were having down years play there and are instantly revitalized. I realize age and injuries play a major factor, but I don't hear many local analysts mention the Coors Field advantage.

 

wRC+ 170 is park adjusted. That was only 2014. I made the Votto comparison last week or so because that's what I think we might be dealing with post labrum surgery.

If we're talking about how Tulowitzki's tenure in Coors impacted his offensive skill set, keep in mind that he's not really a power type of guy even with the 20-30 HR he would hit in a year. When the Jays got him I thought first of his defense and ability to get on base. If he can get to his career norm of about .370 OBP and hit 10-15 HRs a year I think we'd all be pleased with that. We don't really need more sluggers in the line up.

 

I mean, even with his atrocious start, he still has an OBP over .300 which isn't SO bad given the context. The Jays have rolled out guys who would struggle to maintain over .300 OBP all year in recent years.

He always had really good numbers on the road playing in pitcher friendly ballparks like PetCo, AT&T and Dodgers Stadium.

Tulo hasn't been the same since his hip surgery. Coors definitely helped but the transition to a different stadium isn't what's killing him.

Tulo's struggles imo seem to be more with his approach or getting over matched/age

 

I think the majority of his hitting success came from being able to hit flat fastballs in the NL. In the AL you see more movement and at times he looks like he can't catch up to the straight one's either (age/injury as you said)
