TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Arden Zwelling just tweeted this. Sorry if not thread worthy, but speaks to overall roster management so far. WTF? Either theres an injury to someone else, a trade coming, or its just stupidity. I think its the latter. I don't really think Atkins is stupid, but my theory is that they want to be as merit-based as possible, so if Hutch pitched well enough to earn another start, they'll do it. I guess it could fit with the overall plan of limiting Sanchez' innings. I dont know...but 3-man bench when Martin is so so health wise as it is is shaky. This roster is handcuffed already with Biagini having to take up a spot. Handcuffing it more with 6 starters on the roster is even more dumb.
ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Hutch > Dickey/Thole. Maybe they see that already.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Has to be a reason for it. But it does speak about Atkin's terrible roster management thus far into the season. He seems like a really smart guy and is a plus to have in the FO but he's struggled as GM so far. His work with the media has been pretty bad IMO too which is a GM's responsibility.

Right, but we all know Shapiro is the real GM. I don't even think about Atkins when I think of the front office. He's just there as a buffer between Mark Shapiro and everything beneath him.

Well this is puzzling but the fact that they didn't feel the need to rush a third catcher to the roster is a positive. Maybe they want to move Sanchez to the bullpen for a spell.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Mets are worried about how hard Thor is throwing, (elbow might not hold up) so they're sending us him for Dickey. Even trade cause were not getting d'naurd (why can't I spell that) back, so technically Mets still win the trade.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Right, but we all know Shapiro is the real GM. I don't even think about Atkins when I think of the front office. He's just there as a buffer between Mark Shapiro and everything beneath him. Shapiro isn't managing the last 3 spots on the 25 man roster, thats Atkins. Shapiro is involved in the big picture stuff and trades etc..
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I don't get this at all. We've got 3 guys who are dinged up in Tulo, Saunders and Martin. Donaldson is probably included in that group too. Bautista is old. A 3-man bench isn't going to cut it.

Maybe they want to move Sanchez to the bullpen for a spell. This could be. Maybe on his next scheduled start day they just skip him and instead he throws two innings out of the pen. That's an awfully long time to use a 3 man bench though, especially when they've got 3 or 4 guys with nagging injuries.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 He tweeted he's staying on the roster tonight. I read somewhere this morning (though I can't recall where) that said he was being kept up tonight, though I can't figure out why. Likely Matt Dominguez being called up.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 In the other thread, Sorrow says that Hutch is only around for one extra day. I don't really understand why they would delay the roster move.

I read somewhere this morning (though I can't recall where) that said he was being kept up tonight to be used in a blow out if required and then being sent down after the game. Likely Matt Dominguez being called up. I doubt they would use him in a blowout since he pitched yesterday but maybe he takes a turn if they use a different starter. Still bizarre.

Absolutely retarded if so.
TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted April 25, 2016 Author Posted April 25, 2016 Reading that due to 3 years (CY) of service time, Hutch has to clear optional waivers, so thats why hes still here.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Dominguez makes sense. Donaldson seemingly needs days off in the field and Dominguez at 3rd is better than Barney. It's tempting to call up Montero but he can't play a position. What a s***** bench we have though. Yuck.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 There's no way he pitches tonight. That would be unheard of.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Is Dominguez a really good 3B? He's a garbage hitter who doesn't have a strong split. Offensively, he barely projects above Barney. Doesn't seem to bring much to the table even if he is more versatile than Montero.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 There's no way he pitches tonight. That would be unheard of. Yeah there is no way he pitches tonight. There is either some strange thing happening that prevented them from making the move (like they want Dominguez but he had a personal issue preventing him from making the trip) or the FO just flat out botched this decision and we are a man short tonight. If they really do want Dominguez because they think he's a better 3B backup than Barney then they f***ed it up and are playing the worse player tonight.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I'm still not really clear on why Hutch was brought up to pitch yesterday frankly.

Offensively, he barely projects above Barney. Doesn't seem to bring much to the table even if he is more versatile than Montero. He had that reputation as a prospect and he would often make top 100 lists from 2009-2012. The metrics don't really show that but they don't say he's really that bad either. Depending on how you evaluate his defense he's probably the better player at 3B than Barney is.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I'm still not really clear on why Hutch was brought up to pitch yesterday frankly. Because it was the longest stretch of the year without a day off. Monday off day followed by a no off day week followed by a Thursday off day. I don't think it can get any longer.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Something positive to take from this is that the Jays are likely bringing up Dominguez over Montero and I feel that it's the right decision. This means Smoak will be the primary 1B and when he's not we will see EE play 1B with the DH being utilized to give breaks to Donaldson, Tulo, Saunders, etc. I'm kind of spitballing here but after looking at the lineup today I think this is what they are doing. I like the idea behind this, but it does suck that our bench is so pathetic. That means that Dominguez, Barney and Zeke will all be getting some spot start every so often.
King Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Shi Davidi @ShiDavidi 4s4 seconds ago John Gibbons says #BlueJays will make a move post-game with Drew Hutchison, had to wait because of an option rule technicality.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Useless thread, he already said yesterday he will stay one more day due to a technicality.

Would be nice to have an outfielder that hits RH. That way you could DH Bautista or Saunders vs a LHP and have Edwin play 1st.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Would be nice to have an outfielder that hits RH. That way you could DH Bautista or Saunders vs a LHP and have Edwin play 1st. Yeah. Eventually perhaps we'll see Pompey come up and fill that role once late summer roles around.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Yeah. Eventually perhaps we'll see Pompey come up and fill that role once late summer roles around. Isn't he bad from the right side though. I remember as a prospect he had a much better swing LH.

I remember as a prospect he had a much better swing LH. i don't think there was a statistical difference. In the small sample size in the majors, he actually has a much better K to BB rate as a RHB although a higher iso as a LHB.
