It is rather peculiar with how poorly he commanded his fastball in yesterday's start that he only walked one batter (HBP excluded). Just about every sinker was up in the zone, a recipe to fail with his pitch usage.

On the plus side his curve looked decent at times, and we saw a few change ups. (Hate saying this but tabler is right, he throws it to hard). The change looks like it needs alot of work still, he's erratic with it and really has a noticeable delivery change that batters will pick up on easily if he starts to use it more. He's still got a long way to go developing those secondary pitches, but the lack of any command of his fastball is somewhat alarming and reeks of Sanchez starts from last season.

Don't forget that 1% usage of the cutter. 1 cutter per start will really give the other team something to think about.

The speed of Sanchez's change up is not a problem at all. It may actually be beneficial as it acts more like a splitter. Change ups get whiffs because of their movement, velocity separation doesn't actually matter that much.

The problem with Sanchez's change is that he can't command it very well. He needs to throw it more to learn to command it.

Velocity difference from the fastball to the change is actually the primary reason for swings and misses. I'm trying to find the articles that did the research to prove this. They found that velocity difference is the highest correlation of whiff rates on the change.

The smaller the gap, even with good drop or fade it correlates more to ground balls.

Yesterdays game with Sanchez against A's changed my opinion of Sanchez; prior to that I was impressed by Sanchez. In the interview after the game he brought up the fact that double plays weren't made, however, in reality Sanchez needed double plays because he put so many hitters on base. Sanchez's sourpuss face is really starting to annoy me.

With Colabello being suspended, it makes me wonder how Sanchez was able to add 25 pounds of muscle to his body in 4 short months; it can be done naturally through hard work but usually not within 4 months.

You one dumb dude.

I have found the opposite IIRC. Harder change was better, irrelevant to fastball velo.

Former catcher over here. The velocity difference is the primary reason for a good changeup. Deceptive.

Your thought of the day? Apparently English wasn't one of your strong subjects.

I concur on the velocity, but a change needs movement as well to be great

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Estrada throw a straight change? Not much movement...but fantastic arm motion. I believe his is all velocity and deception, and very little based on movement.

So here we are after 6 starts:

8 K/9

2.8 BB/9

60% GB rate

3.33/3.20 FIP/xFIP

0.7 WAR (Already surpassed the preseason ZIPs projection of 0.6 in 100 innings)

8.8% Swstr up from 7.0 last year

Batters Faced: 158

Swstr stabilizes at 70 and walk rate stabilizes at 170...so he's approaching that point as well.

The most promising thing so far for me has definitely been the reduction in walks. His first pitch strike percentage is way up and he doesn't look as out of control as last year. I see lots of positive signs so far, but I wonder how much is small sample size and how much is a true change in talent...

Aaron Sanchez has a career MLB ERA of 2.69. I'm not saying that's sustainable, but it's pretty damn good for 163 IP.

He also has a career BABIP of .238 which clearly isn't sustainable, but I expect his BABIP would be slightly lower than average given the GB rate.

Another random stat: If he keeps pitching like this he would be a 2.5 WAR pitcher over 140 innings
