Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 Judgment plays like these shouldn't be reviewable. If the umpires saw something and they confer (ala 2004 alcs) that's another thing. But using video review for subjective (did the player intend to do this, would he have been able to do that) calls is not right. The whole point of video replay is to get safe/out, fair/foul, double/HR calls right, the things that are objectively measurable. Judgment calls should be made by on-field umpires so there's at least some accountability. And to cap it off it makes absolutely no sense that infield fair/foul is not reviewable. Decent point. Umps are allowed to review the catcher blocking the plate at home too...which is also somewhat of a judgement play...like it, I think he argument is the ump has too many things to be watching for at once....
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 My opinion (grab aside, although in fairness I think THAT happened after the ball was already released) was that Bautista sliding in that manner specifically prevented him from attempting to remain on the bag (since his arms and hands were on the wrong side of the bag with his body in between). It was probably the right call, but still sucks.
