I don't like the timing of this quote. The only focus should be on now. Shapiro should be in the background unless hes firing Gibbons.

The timing of the quote is related to the question being asked directly and the answer was basically that no they are not focused on re-signing these guys at the moment so what's the problem exactly?

So what's everyone's predictions for the team's free agents?

Bautista - offered QO and signs somewhere else for 3/75 with an opt-out after year 1

Encarnacion - offered QO and signs somewhere else for 4/100

Saunders - accepts QO

Dickey - signs somewhere else for 1/7

Feldman - signs somewhere else for 2/15

Benoit - re-signs for 1/4

Cecil - signs somewhere else for 2/12

Navarro - re-signs for 1/3

Thole - continues to leech off Dickey for league min

I didn't hear the interview so excuse my ignorance.

I feel like that would be a disaster

I definitely hope they don't offer Saunders the QO. Unless they know for sure he will decline it. He may opt for security. But hard to pass on 17M for one year. Considering he's probably looking at 3 years 30-35m otherwise at the most.

He's right on the border of being offered or not. Gonna finish at about 2 wins. I don't think I'd offer it, but I kind of think the team will.

I'd offer Saunders the QO and wouldn't feel bad one bit if he took it (although missing out on the pick wouldn't be ideal). The AAV might be a bit steep but it's only one year. We will need to fill out the lineup next season and the FA class sucks.

I was pretty sure a month or two ago that I was in this camp, but now I'm not really sure. He's going to finish at about 2 fWAR and is still riding a BABIP 35 points above his career BABIP. Not sure that's the best way to spend $17M.

Bautista isn't getting 3/75. He's looking at 1 year for $10-15M + incentives(at best). No team will give him $25M with his decline with the bat and the glove. Edwin will likely resign with Toronto--Boston isn't paying $25M a year for Edwin considering how much payroll is already on their books and not wanting to block several top prospects. And Saunders is borderline.. everyone else will likely be gone.

Yep. A one year deal for Saunders is unlikely to be a problem for us on the whole, so I wouldn't be upset if he accepted the QO. And if he rejects it and signs elsewhere, I'm not really going to be terribly upset either.

I think Bautista and EE are likely both gone.

They've both managed to convince themselves that the Jays ripped them off for signing them well under their level of production.

And while that's true, they seem to be forgetting that the Jays took a big risk on them. At the time of their signing, they had only one full year each of being awesome, and several years of mediocre performance. For every Bautista, there's six other guys who fell apart after one big year.

Also has a pretty poor injury history

Romero, Lind, Hill, Morrow, etc.

I'm just guessing here but I think this front office would be more comfortable overpaying for one year through a q.o. over making long term commitments through free agency and they also seem pretty concerned about a lack of bodies under control for 2017 (the attempted Jay Bruce acquistition, the Smoak signing, the Upton trade all suggest a much) so yeah I could see it happening though the likelihood will keep diminishing if he doesn't finish the season strong.

He'll probably get another day off with Estrada starting

Fine with me. Not sure about tonight (will prob depend on Estrada) but I think we can win tomorrow/Sunday since they have Rodriguez/Suckholz going.

There's no way Saunders accepts the QO is there? Guy hasn't made much money in the bigs and his body is held together by duct tape. Wouldn't he take something like 3/40 over 1/17 in a heartbeat?

He's never come close to making 17 million, so it depends on whether he and his agent believe there would be a 20+ million dollar deal out there somewhere.

He's in a similar boat to Rasmus last season. Actually, he's playing worse and with a scarier injury history. I doubt there's 3/40 out there for him.

I think we'll resign Saunders. He needs a big payday, and doesn't want to go into free agency with the QO hanging over his head.

He's good, but not so good, that the QO won't hurt him considerably.

The only thing he might have over Rasmus is a less attractive free agent pool to compete with and I'm not even sure about that because I've already forgotten what this year's FA class was like.

Might be able to work out a deal similar to Estrada though I don't know if that's really preferable to the q.o. Gives you a body for 2018 but I don't think it's a body anyone would have tremendous confidence in by then.

Welp, for some reason (only God and Gibby know why) Navarro is batting 6th tonight. So I guess that makes him a better hitter than Saunders, Upton, Pillar. If it wasn't for Pillar's base running maybe you could make a case for 8th, otherwise there's really no spot for him other than 9th.

Actually, the market for bats is better than I remembered:

Encarnacion, Bautista, Ramos, Napoli, Walker, Prado, Turner, Pearce, Desmond, Moss, Pagan, Rasmus, Saunders, Thames, Valbuena, Cespedes, Beltran, Reddick, Trumbo

I would love to sign Pearce to play RF and Pearce to play 1B.
