Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Sure. Same could be said for 5 other teams who are within 3 games. Vying for a one game playoff spot isn't really an enviable situation to be in though, especially when it might be your last kick at the can. There's no reason the team can't continue to compete going forward. The entire pitching staff is locked up, we have the MVP, and we have a number of nice complimentary offensive pieces. We also have money to spend and a smart front office.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 I imagine this was the last spot Shatkins wanted to be in half way through the season. Caught between contention and rebuilding with two premier sluggers about to hit free agency, a year after the organization ended the longest playoff drought in the league. Up against a fan base that will call for their heads if they do anything but sell the hobby farm at the deadline. Agreed. They are in a spot where they could win a WC spot or get overtaken, and neither scenario would be surprising. If they end 2016 without a playoff berth and only get picks for JB, EE, and now I guess Saunders, then that would be pretty disappointing.
Hal Johnson Verified Member Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Is Gibbons allergic to putting the best possible lineup on the field?
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 I get Travis probably needs a day off...but seriously he is our second hottest hitter over the last 2 weeks.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Is Gibbons allergic to putting the best possible lineup on the field? You guys bitch about the lineup so much, I just don't get it. Gibbons doesn't rest his players more than any other manager. It's baseball, get used to it.

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 They basically played a double header on Wednesday and then hopped on a plane. And the guys getting the most time off are the injury risks who everyone will scream told-you-so if they break again.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Never! Bitching is the life blood of sports fandom! I don't know what baseball you are watching but he does wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more than other managers. Edit: that was suppose to be replied to Grants post

Edit: that was suppose to be replied to Grants post I could have sworn the Indians rested regulars last night, oh and the Rockies did in all 3 games, oh and the White Sox too. Must be a coincidence.

Must be a coincidence. Injuries is not resting imo. Taking a guy out of your lineup on a 8 game hit streak and 15 of last 16 is idiotic unless it's the catcher.
puphood Verified Member Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 3 more games before I make up mind if these guys are buyers or sellers......Cecil looked OK last night......Stroman today, if he doesn't step up he's going to get flushed.....

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Travis is on pace for over 4 WAR and he missed the first 50ish games of the year.

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 You're talking about the guy who missed a calendar year with a shoulder injury, right? It was an underlying condition that's essentially a birth defect. Shouldn't be the same as say rolling your ankle etc.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 It was an underlying condition that's essentially a birth defect. Shouldn't be the same as say rolling your ankle etc. Maybe he did roll his ankle. You have no idea.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Maybe he did roll his ankle. You have no idea. Possible. But more likely Gibby just wants to get Barney some ABs, but instead of playing over K machine Smoak he takes out our second hottest hitter. Reality is no one will know exact reasoning, but Gibby does make more stupid/questionable lineups than any other manager I have seen.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 The Blue Jays are averaging over 38,000 per game this year - http://espn.go.com/mlb/attendance (actually 38,123 after drawing 41,365 tonight) and are 6 in attendance (probably tied for 5th now since they slightly outdrew NY Yankees tonight). On the other hand, the Cleveland Indians are last in attendance at 16,656 (worse than Tampa Bay). Last year they only averaged 17,806 and were 29th out of 30 teams - http://espn.go.com/mlb/attendance/_/year/2015 Why is the Cleveland attendance so bad? Because you don't see the attendance numbers jump until the following year. Also with the Cavs title run who in their right mind was going to go to an Indians game during all of that? Now that is done I think attendance will jump in the summer. If they win the division the attendance spike will happen the following year much like the Blue Jays did. I hate it when Jays fans complain about other fanbases when only a few years ago there would be like 8000 people in the dome watching the team.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Outside of the last two weeks the Indians were fluttering around .500 the way most teams do. They didn't seem particularly special then -- two guys busted for PEDs and the team's best player on the shelf. For a team that struggles to draw attendance anyway, it's no surprise that no one particularly cared. It's not like they've been Cubs-good all year.

Interesting thought, maybe we shouldn't jump to conclusions then.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 They should DL Schultz and call-up Danny Barnes. He's been so dominant this season in AA and now AAA. He deserves a shot. His line today was another great one: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
