Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 You also don't want EE going to one of your competitors, since I'm assuming his owner is in sell mode.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 You're a stingy negotiator, maybe you can get a throw-in, like a reliever upgrade. Ultimately though, you should pull the trigger straight up if necessary.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 Please don't. I wanted Syndergaard so bad with the pick I used on Cole. I was taking him at 34 over Harvey if he was still there, but BB probably would have taken him one before me too. No way he was getting to 41. Syndergaard owners in other leagues should probably rejoice I didn't get him. Kiss of death.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 People put too much stock in pitcher's age. Expecting even a young horse to still be productive in 4-5 years is a big stretch, and it's not like EE is going to call it quits soon. John Lackey has thrown around 200 innings of #2 starter stuff for 4 straight years and he always gets drafted later than he deserves. I don't know that I've ever paid out the ass for a young ace in any dynasty and zero regrets about it. Closest is maybe Braun for Harvey. Gimme a Max Scherzer or David Price over Cole and Syndergaard every time.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 Well, you haven't ruined Smyly yet, at least. His 4.37 xFIP this year says otherwise. (I think he'll bounce back, but almost every pitcher I've touched this year except Sanchez has been a disaster)
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 Well, you haven't ruined Smyly yet, at least. Smyly blows lol. He's a damn home run machine.

I've shifted my philosophy on pitchers towards targeting reliable guys with almost no regard for age, and then riding them until their arms explode. A Stroman or Sanchez isn't a more attractive asset than a Lester IMO.

Except you spent a higher pick on Scherzer than I spent on Syndergaard, so really it was you who paid out the ass for someone who is demonstrably worse and 10 years older.

It kind of feels like Scherzer will be throwing 200 innings long after Syndergaard's arm explodes.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 It kind of feels like Scherzer will be throwing 200 innings long after Syndergaard's arm explodes. If Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay have taught us anything, it's that Scherzer's arm is just as likely to explode. The difference is how many good years they'd each have after the explosion. If you blow out your elbow at 23, you can lose a year and then have another good decade. Blow out your arm at 33, often it can be the end of the line.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 John Lackey's career is borderline miraculous, gotta hand it to him. He sucked for several years and was circling the drain, then somehow rebounded in his late 30s to have the true prime of his career. That is rare and remarkable. Even still, no one is going to draft him ahead of Gerrit Cole in a dynasty.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 You're right, he's not worse.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 Well, you haven't ruined Smyly yet, at least. Pretty sure he had a shoulder thing shortly after I traded him to Abom in BBDL a while back.

You would have thought both guys weren't an injury away from ending their careers and were going to be able to pitch at an elite level into their late 30's. Even Brandon Webb's career came to a crashing end. It's unfortunate.

I'm sure Lee could have come back if he wanted to, but simply doesn't want to.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 Boxy, I don't want to lose to you, but if Miggy can help me beat silvergun this week, I'll take it.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 I'm 2 days from ending your season BB. Better step it up.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 I'm 2 days from ending your season BB. Better step it up. Best offence in the league decides to go on vacation for a week. Not even 1 f***ing HR.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 I would like to dedicate this win to being objectively better than Boxy.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 BB is going to miss the playoffs with the league's best offense lol.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 BB's team is kinda interesting. I wonder at which point it's better to be competitive in both hitting and pitching rather than dominant in one and weak in the other. At this point it seems all but certain he's going to miss the playoffs, although losing Trevor Story and Strasburg down the stretch definitely has a lot to do with that.
