Lake has a bit of upside and Carmona is a good depth piece since he's old and can pitch a bunch of non-garb (maybe close to garbage) innings if he has to.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 I don't think picking up depth should have any bearing on future "big" moves. Depth claims are nice insurance in almost every case and a shrewd org will try to do as much as they can to smooth over any potential roster pot holes. I wouldn't pass up a minor league contract for Fausto Carmona just because I had a line on Jacob deGrom or something. I like all of these grabs too FWIW.

I find the fact that Junior Lake is out of options to be interesting. I'm not saying this facilitates a move, but recent decisions make me think that trades involving our outfielders are being discussed.

They need depth either way. I don't think there's any connection, although they've already made public representations that make it fairly clear that they aren't actively looking to make any big splashes because they don't think it's necessary.

Yeah that may be true. I'm not sure what Penny has left but Carmona is definitely the type of guy you want as your 7th-8th starter and it looks like he'll be exactly that. You go with Hutch or Chavez as your #5 and have him ready for any injury. I mean really they just need a bunch of guys who can eat innings and keep the team in the game with their hitting, so Carmona > some unproven guy like Boyd or even Norris from early last year.

This is already being discussed in the offseason roster thread.

Decent depth, nothing to see here.

Yeah Hernandez is an excellent MiLB signing. So is Penny - in 2014 he was still sitting 92 and touching 95. Hopefully at least one of them decides not to opt out at the end of ST.

P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 I'm moderately intrigued by the Penny signing. He could become a pretty nice relief option if he's willing to come out of the 'pen, which I'd have to assume he'd be fine with.

He's actually played every spot except catcher and pitcher in the minors.

I would have never guessed that and it's nice flexibility, but he hasn't played the infield at all since 2012 so it's probably safe to label him as an outfielder.
