Moesby Verified Member Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 the Jays should work out a deal to get Shelby Miller. I wonder what Atlanta would want for him. Revere or Pillar and a prospect?

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 Atlanta needs young hitting, so you'll need to give up one of Pillar/Pompey and another top prospect at least.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 Sign me up for Revere and a prospect. Pentecost and call it a deal?
Hipfan Verified Member Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 Would be a nice pickup, but I doubt the Jays and Braves match up well. I'd do Revere/Sanchez/Pentecost, but I don't want to give up Pompey/Pillar/Alford, and the Braves would probably want one of those guys. I would really like to see them move Sanchez, assuming he could be a centrepiece for a solid #2-3 starter that has some cost control (either still arb eligible or on a decent contract).

Don't see the trading Sanchez.

Laika Community Moderator Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 Shelby Miller: A) the most overrated pitcher in baseball the most overrated player in baseball pick! (no other options exist)

reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 He was a top pitching prospect for 2-3 years before he came up and could still get better. You guys just like to s*** on players who have a lower ERA than xFIP and ignore the big picture.

It's just hard to see why Shelby Miller should be expected to continue to outperform his mediocre peripherals. I see nothing unique or potentially unique in his skillset. Maybe something's there, but there's no reason to assume there is. The fact that he used to be a top prospect has literally zero bearing on his ERA-DIPS differential. Sure he could improve, but anybody could improve...

reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 What big picture? He's a young controllable pitcher with big upside and was highly touted since he was in high school. Despite what their xFIPs and WARs are, he has a lot more trade value than Drew Hutchison and rightfully so. The Braves made a very good move trading 1 year of Heyward for him.

So you're saying because he was highly touted, he has high trade value. That is true. Doesn't change the fact that he's grossly overrated though.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 Despite what their xFIPs and WARs are, he has a lot more trade value than Drew Hutchison and rightfully so.. Of course he has more trade value. Nobody would disagree. The Braves made a very good move trading 1 year of Heyward for him. Probably only if they flip Miller this offseason. Otherwise, they could have gotten better long term assets a year ago.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 Staring at his fangraphs page? Thanks tips! No need to stare, his numbers quickly demonstrate that he's a league average pitcher who has benefited from environment and exceptional batted ball luck this year. The Braves are absolutely right to sell him now while there are still some ignorant GMs (like Dave Stewart) who share your extremely limited ability (and close-minded willingness) to understand predictive metrics.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 Despite what their xFIPs and WARs are, he has a lot more trade value than Drew Hutchison and rightfully so. Exactly, and yet they are very comparable pitchers. Meanwhile, you'd gladly give up good assets for one while you wouldn't even give the one we have a shot in the rotation. A bird in the bush is better than a bird in hand, apparently.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 Kyle Drabek was highly touted.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 Drabek's never really had any ML success. That's the point. Highly touted in high school or wherever means nothing.

Um, where did I imply that his ERA was more indicative of how he pitched than anything else? I just said you guys look at a few metrics and call it a day which is generally the vibe I get when I read this forum. NJH is right saying nothing about his skill set screams future ace, but he has a lot more potential than Drew Hutchison IMO. Here's a fairly positive article I glossed over for you to read: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/shelby-miller-pseudo-prospect/
