GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Given the large surge of support of the team in the final 2 months and with the massive TV audience in the playoffs. What do you feel Rogers will be willing to budget for the payroll next year realistically?
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 Im optimistically hoping for $160 million but realistically am thinking 145ish
crmr Verified Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Hard to know for sure but they won't need to increase it too much to be as competitive, so the amount they actually get to may not be that important Assuming they pick up Dickey's option, re-sign Estrada, don't pick up Buehrle's option and sign one other starter, add in some arb raises and (probably) a signing of Donaldson I would guess we're looking at about 150 mil
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Around $150M US. They'll add some pitching and bullpen help with the money coming off the books and playoff revenues. Don't be surprised if Estrada gets resigned.. despite his strong season, he won't be getting huge money and contract length due to being a late bloomer when he got to Toronto. We'll also likely add a big name starter in addition as well. And FYI, I don't see the currency being an issue.. it is unlikely the Canadian dollar will stay this low long term, as oil prices are likely to rebound back to about $60-70/barrel or higher within the next year, which will likely drive our currency to about the 80-85 cent range.

Buerhle's $20m is going to be eaten up really quick with Arbitration raises and Martin's pay jump. If they do free up much money from last year's payroll it is going to be from declining an option like RA. Adding a frontline starter, bullpen arms and resigning Estrada would probably push the payroll closer to $175m.

Any chance you have a breakdown of that, because that sounds extremely optimistic? That's basically the number I get if you resign Estrada and Lowe for exactly what they made this year and fill in Navarro, Price, Buerhle, and Hawkins spot with pre-arb guys.

canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Our budget will depend on the player and deal just like this year. I think they will spend if the right deal comes along.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Just a bit under $189 million. During the last two months they finally realized the entire country will watch if they can stay competitive.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 $137.5 to start the season. I'll take the over. I'm fine with it in the 145 range but I hope they use more money for Latin America improvements to Dunedin etc...

Much like this year, I think AA's future plans will always be to have cash for mid-season improvements. I think the end number will be somewhere around $145 if they do well

You could make a case the budget should be in the $160 range with how much money the Jays are making. Top 5 market in MLB.

Not happening and why on earth would you pay Estrada $14m
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Not happening and why on earth would you pay Estrada $14m 3 for 40 is about what it will take to get him. so maybe 16 million for year 1 and 12M per year for years 2 and 3.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 $137.5 to start the season. It will cost them at least 25/Year for top end starter. Can jiminez catch as our backup next year?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 It will cost them at least 25/Year for top end starter. Can jiminez catch as our backup next year? Only if his defense is elite. Guy can't hit a lick. 538 OPS as a 25 year old minor leaguer. It's probably time to cut bait actually.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 is there a catcher out there who can catch a knuckleball and HIT/throw? Russell Martin.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Russell Martin. do we want Russell catching Dickey? He did seemed to be a little better as the year went along but he was also very beat up
TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 It will cost them at least 25/Year for top end starter. Can jiminez catch as our backup next year? I just don't see them paying the top price on any top pitcher. I think it will be a trade and maybe sign a guy like Iwakuma or Kennedy
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 do we want Russell catching Dickey? He did seemed to be a little better as the year went along but he was also very beat up Hard to find someone to catch the knuckler. I mean potentially any good catcher should be able to do it but there aren't enough opportunities to practice it. You either go with someone who has already done it or you just get someone who is very quiet behind the plate and groom him into it. They explored the later option with Kratz and word is he wasn't that far off but he hadn't quite caught up to Thole. Matrin didn't catch up to Thole either but he was going to get more rope on account of his overall importance to the team. I don't think you can find a guy who can both hit somewhat and catch the knuckler effectively while also commanding only a backup salary.
labadee Verified Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 the weak Canadian dollar would certainly play a role. While salaries are I'm USD, the owners will be forking up much more in CAD. I don't think it would be much higher than this year's salary.

Rogers/Blue Jays have the option of asking MLB to help out with the currency exchange. IIRC they turned it down a number of years ago, but with the exchange as bad as it is I hope they ask for it again.

That's quite a lot for Estrada. I am hoping 3/30 can get it done since he has a chance to be on a competitive team those 3 years.
