He was a great defender, but it looks like he may have already lost a step.

UZR/150

2013: 22.3

2014: 7.6

2015: -1.6

By DRS he went:

2013: 13

2014: 13

2015: 1

But if you look at Inside Edge he's been pretty much the same the last 4 years. I would expect him to slow down fairly soon although the arm should remain elite.

That was a really good interview. I'm not a big Phillips fan after the harassment incident at ESPN but he's a really good interview. Since he was a GM before he seems to be able to relate to the person and get the most out of them, unlike what we've seen before.

One of the interesting things Shapiro said was that he thinks 28 years old is the start of the decline phase.

It wasnt harassment, he cheated on his wife with a 22 year old production assistant, and for that was fired from ESPN. Back in the late 90's however, it was alleged that harassment took place but was actually denied by the women who filed a civil suit.

From the pictures though, I'm not really sure what motivated him to cheat, the girl was butt ugly

Goodbye Donaldson, Martin, Tulo, Jose, and Eddy.

Lol take it you didn't watch the video because right afterwards he said that that was the average and players age differently and from different baselines. He isn't going to trade elite players just because they are in the decline stage of their careers. Martin is here for the rest of his career pretty much anyway. Even at his age he's a top 3 Catcher.

You are correct, I did not watch the video. I was mostly joking though. I'm sure we'll keep Martin and try to extend Donaldson if the cost isn't astronomical.

The harassment case happened when he was with the Mets before he went to ESPN and had his tryst.

I really like Steve Phillips on the MLB Radio morning show. I often listen to it on the way to work in the morning. Unless the crazy f'ers on Mad Dog Sports (where Phillips used to be) are doing a really good segment.

Do you have Sirius XM or something? How do you listen to it in the car?

"Our depth is not that strong". Thank you Shapiro for stating the obvious. This team has done a good job of crossing the most obvious needs, putting rotations together for the big team and for AAA, bringing in another late inning reliever, signing a few bench guys and try out candidates but that's just addressing the most obvious needs. It's still not exceptional depth. Lots of question marks in the OF depth chart, Goins playing every day to start the season, Josh Thole is terrible but a necessary evil, 1B platoon takes away a lot of your roster flexibility. The team isn't pushing as much minor league talent onto the roster as AA did and that's a good thing but that's mostly because there's hardly anything left to push. AA would had have to sign guys for a AAA rotation and would have needed to bring in guys like Maicer, Tony Sanchez and Matt Dominguez too. Plugging holes is nice but Shapiro made it clear he'd still like to have better depth. Some of that may get addressed internally at spring training but it sounds like the team might still bring in more bodies too if the opportunity is there.

"Start of decline" != "finished"

Especially when the decline starts from so high of a peak.

So I take it the Grey team will be the one starting the season?

LOL. Hopefully only the guy hitting in the 2 hole.

OMG best quote:

...More than over it, judging by the way Tulowitzki joined in the banter with his teammates, who were alternately baiting Jose Bautista about his contract demands and teasing him about it.

Talk about demotivational for most of the poor suckers on the Grey team....

GIbbons "You wanna piss me off boy? Wanna get cast down to the Grey's?"

Player: "No sir, please don't send me there sir, I'll stop being obtuse."

That's not very encouraging at all. Makes the May timetable seem pretty arbitrary. Looks like we'll see a lot of Goins and Barney and maybe some Maicer too.

Goins and Barney is fine. Absolutely no reason to see Maicer Izturis at all.
