So, Saunders goes from throwaway piece to possibly our everyday LF and leadoff hitter. Awesome. Can he run? Walk? Stand???

Maybe a leadoff platoon with the other guy hitting somewhere in the bottom third of the order?

If Tulo is destined to hit 5th I'd do Martin leadoff. If they are worried about Martin's workload then Saunders vs RHP and Martin vs LHP seems like a good idea.

Doesn't need to run. He only has to be able to job around the bases with JD, JB, EE and Tulo hitting behind him.

Suddenly, Austin Jackson leading off would be amazing. Never mind the upgrade in left.

Jist what I was thinking

I wouldn't even really want Jackson leading off. Someone who can be 120 runs in front of JD and JB and not 95.

Martin

When it started to become clear Tulo doesn't want to do it, Martin became my favourite choice for leadoff but again, this is practically a non-issue. Overall the expected run value for a month or two of a s***** lead-off hitter is negligible even before you start accounting for creative platoon scenarios.

My post didn't make much sense, i didn't mean to agree with Cybord that EE would be generous in his asking AAV.

Even with the DH penalty, he has a reasonable case for asking 100/6. And EE isn't just any DH, he is safely one of the 10 best hitters in baseball and at 32 he can demand 5 years at a high AAV or 6/7 years at a lower AAV.

I'd strongly consider 6/100.

Yeah, I like that idea a lot too.

Why isn't anyone signing Jackson? it's weird. Decent offensive, can steal 20-25 bases, and plus defense. I don't get it.

In the two years before last, Saunders had about a .338 OBP vs. RHP which is what most projections would spit out for Tulo and Martin so it's really not a big deal to me.

Pillar has the potential to be a disaster in that spot but if he grinds his way to a .315-.320 OBP it's not going to sink our team.

The plus with Pillar, at least for this fan, is he'll get a ton of fastballs to hit, which he seems to feast on (don't have stats in front of me to underline this, though), and second, he can steal a base almost at will. He may have an OBP of .320, but a lot of those singles can be stretched a bit with the speed. But then again, with this offense behind him, does he need to steal? I think yes, stress out the defense of the opposition, force mistakes, and so on. Also, it'd allow Pillar to really develop that part of his game. Gain really good experience. But if he's not going to ever get the green light, then you may as well shove Tulo in the lead off position. Or anyone from 2-6, really.

I may have about seven too many commas in my reply above.

I think the issue is late in the game in high leverage situations not the overall expected run value over the course of the season. If the 9th inning is coming up and you are down by a run do you want Goins-Pillar-Donaldson or Goins-Martin-Donaldson?

I don't have a problem with Saunders leading off vs RHP. Honestly Collabello is probably the best non-Martin option vs LHP.

The Royals just won the WS with the 4th worst hitter in all of baseball last year leading off. It's just much easier to roll your eyes and stop caring

Just because the Royals won with s***** lineup construction does not mean you should set a bad lineup for your own team. I hate when people bring this up.

I think Cyborg ran the numbers and it made such a small small difference between different optimal lineups, having Pillar bat leadoff over Tulo or Martin is nothing more than roll your eyes. There's a lot more ignorance that goes on at the MLB level

No, but it does illustrate the often overlooked point that lineup construction doesn't really make that much difference overall. A few runs here or there over the course of a season. Obviously you would like to optimize it, but it doesn't make that much difference in the end.

Players still care about RBIs and have retarded pre-conceived notions like you bat your best hitter 3rd. It's ignorant, but it is what it is. Perhaps psychologically undermining several of your best players really would be a significant detriment to your team. I guess what I'm saying is I don't really care much.

If Tulo outright says "I don't want to hit leadoff," you don't hit him leadoff. Lineup construction is more about not being massively stupid than it is maximization. Saunders at leadoff would be fine. Pillar, probably less so.
