I thought about white-texting a "dis" in front of "Grace" but I figured, eh, it's BTS, no need to rub salt in the wound.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Hague. He's out of options anyways. He's essentially a poor man's Valencia. Rakes lefties, can play passable 3B, 1B, and corner OF. Yup forgot about him. Will be the obvious 3B back up.
500LevelSTH Verified Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Some realities... Hague is a AAAA player, not MLB level. Bello is a pro hitter, but likely wont get much on trade market... Thole as backup lol. Carry on.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Hague hasn't really gotten any major league chances over the years, though. If he really can play a passable third base, then he could be okay as a bench player. They needed to clear some cash to make room for Price and Revere. Isn't he terrible defensively at 3rd base? Also wasn't Valencia let go because he did something in the clubhouse that pissed off the other players?
canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 I keep hearing guests on Fan590 that trading Tulo is possible? I don't know how I feel about that since that means Goins at SS but pending the return I would be open to it as the back end of his contract is quite large

Tulo has a no trade clause so it would be pretty hard to move him I would think. The contract really isn't that bad. By 2018, 20 million will be like what 13 or 14 million is now which is pretty manageable especially for a player the caliber of Tulo. Also do not want to go into the season with Ryan Goins as my starting SS. He's a perfect backup infielder to have, lets not make him more than that.

I like Tulo and don't think we are in any rush to move him but I don't see him as someone who would veto any deal out of Canada if the right opportunity came around for he and his family. His deal is longer but its much more of an asset than Reyes if he can stay reasonably healthy.

That being said unless you are getting a good starting SS back or are able to acquire one at the same time, I don't see the deal making the team better.

AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 As a bat off the bench and if you platoon him with someone, I don't have a problem with him back under those circumstances. Not in a full-time role though. Why not a full-time role, and why platoon him? His bat works against LHP and RHP and as we've seen his glove is not actually that bad at 1B. Just don't put him in the outfield, because it confuses the sabermetricians. Colabello is an unknown quantity right now. There's an element of fluke, but sustaining his numbers for as long as he did suggests, that he's figured something out.
500LevelSTH Verified Member Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 I would of loved what your expert opinion on Collabello was before this season I am a huge Bello fan, would never of guessed he would blossom, still love him, domt trade him. Reality is he doesnt have a long MLB resume.

Joking aside, if Tulo does not perform or is injured consistently again then the talks will likely resurface by the media reinforced by disgruntled fans who want to read such rumors.

He won't have a hitting problem, he heated up during the last few games and he's a proven swatter. He'll be fine come opening day.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 But what is the direction of the team this off season none of us know! So Tulo and Hutch for Walker Diaz and Hultzen would not happen if offered ! We sure about that! Would a Goins Travis middle infield be that bad or any worse then what we had this year, they tell me Travis is a stud on here!
Slugger Verified Member Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 My thoughts on some of our players; Justin Smoak - with Colabello, Encarnacion and Bautista's eventual move from RF to 1B, I don't see any scenario in which Smoak is signed. Brett Cecil - I think it would be in the clubs best interest to sign him to a contract longer than 1 year. He's going to get huge money if they let him hit FA next year as he's been as dominant as anyone out of the pen for 3 seasons. Mark Lowe - needs to be re-signed. R.A. Dickey - it'll be very interesting to see what Shapiro thinks about the knuckleball. He may want to use that $11M elsewhere and rid himself of having to carry Thole on top of that. This is the deepest FA market for pitching we've seen in years, so I'm not sure there's as much risk letting Dickey go as there would be any other year. The funny thing is that if Dickey is replaced he'd probably be replaced with a conventional pitcher who puts up the same numbers anyway. Ben Revere - he's as empty calories as a player can get, but you can do a lot worse. Of course he shouldn't be hitting lead-off, but he's young, controllable and a pretty good option as a stop-gap player for a couple years. Who knows, he may improve. Roberto Osuna - despite the kicking and screaming of some on here I don't think there's anyway Osuna is put in the starting rotation. Ryan Goins - he's an everyday player. It's a s***** spot for him to be in.

I could see us bringing Smoak back. I don't think anyone wants Coleballo to be the bon a fide starter and there aren't many options out there in FA at all. I suppose we could trade for one but that trades going to cost us somewhere else. Maybe trading Revere for one could be a good move, but does that actually get us better? If Bautista moves to 1B then you are right, no chance Smoak is back but I don't think that happens in 2016.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 Joey Votto would be a pretty poor use of disposable salary considering our roster as currently constructed. We already have a glut of above average hitters who should be limited to 1B/DH next year.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 We don't have an above average hitting 1B. I referring mostly to Bautista and Encarnacion, with Colabello being a tertiary consideration. So yes, we have two, at least.
