THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 I'm still playing with my list but currently three of those are not in my top 5 What's yours? I know some really like Greene, but, for me, he's not top 5. I can understand if you have Gurriel Jr in there. On second thought, he's probably in my top 5, ahead of Urena, and boxing out Tellez.
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 So Vlad JR is legit? Always been intrigued by him because of his dad.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Toronto's system has a few who could be #1

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 So Vlad JR is legit? Always been intrigued by him because of his dad. Absolutely. The peripherals by him at that age is astounding.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 vlad, reid-foley, tellez, alford all defensible as #1 Replace Tellez with Greene in that sentence, and I agree.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Replace Tellez with Greene in that sentence, and I agree. Tellez the real deal bro. Look at age/level, k rate, walk rate, progression rate - everything is on point. His numbers actually improving as he has moved up through the system. Only mark against him is he is seen as a DH guy but the recent reports suggest he could play an average 1B.

I'm well aware of the stats - trust me. I don't think he should be anyone's number one, but I won't knock someone if they put him there; I'm all for list disparity. That's why we're crowd-sourcing the list. I'm actually really excited to see the results.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 (edited) My final list is probably: 1) Vlad Guerrero Jr 2) Anthony Alford 3) Sean Reid-Foley 4) Lourdes Gurriel Jr 5) Richard Urena . . . 6) Rowdy Tellez 7) Bo Bichette 8) Conner Greene 9) TJ Zeuch 10) Jon Harris . . . 11) Justin Maese 12) Max Pentacost 13) Reese McGuire 14) Harold Ramirez 15) Josh Palacios Edited November 16, 2016 by THANOS

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Author Posted November 16, 2016 I don't have BoBi quite as high as some of you might...and the only reason is that I want to see him do it at a higher level. Should he be in Lansing this year and the bat still produces, he'll skyrocket.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 You know it's a top 15, right? Ok, then the rest is likely: 11) Justin Maese 12) Max Pentacost 13) Reese McGuire 14) Harold Ramirez 15) Josh Palacios

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 I have to admit. I don't really see the argument for Greene. He's a model. That will get him points from BJMB fanboys.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 I have to admit. I don't really see the argument for Greene. Same, he's just another guy with a good fastball and nothing else.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 I have to admit. I don't really see the argument for Greene. Are you only looking at stats? He has two plus pitches already (fastball and changeup), and a third, his curveball, flashes plus. He's still very much a project at this point, but his stuff is legit. Command of those pitches, if it comes, will generate the sexy results and shoot him to the top of prospect lists.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Same, he's just another guy with a good fastball and nothing else. His hard curve is a plus pitch and the changeup is coming along well considering he didn't even throw one until we drafted him. Stats are helpful, but you are going to miss on a lot of players if you ignore half of the big picture.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 I think KingKat just watched Anger Management at some point and wasn't impressed with Greene's performance. kidding...

Should he be in Lansing this year and the bat still produces, he'll skyrocket. That's basically my take, Bo had an extremely impressive pro debut and could easily shoot up the list next year, but for now I couldn't justify putting him ahead of other guys with impressive tools who are having success in the upper minors.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Where have you seen his curveball being a 70 pitch? Where did he say that at all? Plus is a 60 at best.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 I think KingKat just watched Anger Management at some point and wasn't impressed with Greene's performance. kidding... I'll just assume it was terrible and that he should focus on baseball.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Author Posted November 16, 2016 Where did he say that at all? Plus is a 60 at best. I also think Greene has a good curve, but to be fair...isn't the scouting scale kinda like this... 50 - Average 60 - Above Average 70 - Plus 80 - Plus Plus Or am I wrong?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 I don't really see the point in putting a numeric value on a subjective assessment. Just seems like a way to make scouting seem more scientific than it is. I mean I guess it's the best way to average out multiple assessments but it feels pretty forced.

If that's the accepted nomenclature then I had it wrong and meant to say that his curve is 60 grade. He throws it as hard as 85 on the stadium gun and it has late bite. It reminds me a lot of Yordano Ventura.

What I do is try to look at comparable players and see how their pitches grade out, but you're right that it is very subjective. It just gets rid of the confusion involving semantics, like what just happened. I do think it is useful for things like speed and arm strength though. Scouts have defined parameters for each grade.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Where did he say that at all? Plus is a 60 at best. Thought he said "plus plus". My mistake.
