Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 Montero with a 14 game hit streak in AAA. He's still s***, get a clue ju1ced. He's good for a call up, and face lefties. The only side he showed a bit of power.

vilifyingforce Verified Member Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 Who gets dropped for Montero? They're not going to DFA Smoak in the same season they give him an extension and having him/Smoak/Edwin/Bautista as 1b/dh is a disaster. Maybe once the rosters expand, but, even then you're dfa'ing somebody. I presume they've been watching him and know if he can hit offspeed stuff or not.

Plus we have multiple s*** bags that can be dropped from the 40.

You don't make a bad decision to justify another bad decision. That horrific extension should have no bearing on whether Smoak should be DFA'd. I'm hoping Shapiro in particular realizes that they f***ed up and just cut Smoak lose, thankfully, he seems to have the right attitude about these things.

How do you think Rogers would react to, 'we just gave Smoak $8-9M a couple of months ago, now we're gonna let him go.' Not too favourably. Smoak isn't going anywhere for that reason.

Shapiro has a lot of leeway with Rogers, he is not even close to being at a point where Rogers will care about relatively minor roster moves involving a relatively low amount of money.

I'm sure he does have a lot of leeway. But cite the case where a player is given a multi-year extension, and 3 months later is released. I'm sure it's happened, but probably for off-field reasons. Do you really think they will give up on him because of a rotten couple of months? Ya...it's not like he's ever really lit the world on fire but they must've like him enough to offer him the extension in the first place. Sorry folks...Smoak is going nowhere...at least not until this time next season at the earliest. It's just really bad optics for Shatkins to release him this soon.
wamco Verified Member Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 Smoak will rebound to career levels at some point.
nmrch Verified Member Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 Smoak will rebound to career levels at some point. And how is that some sort of a relief? Smoak's career offensive numbers combined with his defence is still a very bad player. There is simply no place in baseball for a 95 wRC+ hitter who can't even play first base properly. His career WAR doesn't lie, 0.5 in 805 games, that's less than 1/10 of a WAR per season, he's the textbook definition of a replacement player.

wamco Verified Member Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 I remember a time, seemed like a year or two ago that smoak was an excellent d 1bman I read here. Now he can't even play 1b. What a fall from grace.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 17 yr old Vladdy with a single, double, triple tonight. OBP .370+ with 8 HR in 211 AB. And he's only getting stronger. Could see him in Lansing this time next year, and knocking on Dunedin's door.

This could be the first real impact bat to come out of our system in a long time. Premature, of course, but it's exciting at the same time.
King Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 BK (Vancouver, BC): Are there any holes in Vlad Jrs offensive game? Does he have a chance to be a really fast riser in the Jays system? Ben Badler: He will overswing sometimes when he tries to do too much, but even when he does that, he has the bat path and hand-eye coordination to make contact, whether it's against premium velocity or making an adjustment against a breaking ball, and he does it with plus raw power and a chance for plus-plus power. He will be in Low-A next year as an 18-year-old, so he's already moving quickly.

5minutesforframing Verified Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 I know Ribbies are relatively meaningless but if Bo has a strong 4 games he could still finish the season leading the league despite having less than half the ABs as the rest of the league. Pretty crazy 20 games he had to start his pro career.
