dineke Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 he's a career .300 hitter who hits against R and L pitching. He's a pretty good defender, but has a s***** arm. He's a great leadoff hitter/LF. .300 doesn't mean much when he doesn't walk and has no power.
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 .300 doesn't mean much when he doesn't walk and has no power. It does mean a lot when he is statistically the best baserunner in the game (although I realize that speed deteriorates faster).
Caper Verified Member Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 .300 doesn't mean much when he doesn't walk and has no power. I get what you are saying. It seems your position is 100% the prevailing notion of all of the baseball minds I listen to to try and form an opinion about matters (Buck, John Shannon and Roger Lajoie)... but it just seems it's not computing with what I'm seeing on the field. Yes, most of his hits are tiny, s***** little hits, but he's still getting on base. Maybe it's something about how he fits in this lineup. Is power less of a thing when you have 3 of the best power hitters right in a row all up right after you? How much does it help said 3 power hitters when such a pesky speed threat is on base so much... even if only first base. We know batting average goes up with a runner on, does it go up further when the runner is a threat to run? I don't know. But I like what I am seeing.

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 Zaun really does have a vendetta against Marcus Stroman. He just said his 3 starters in the ALDS would be Price, Dickey, and Estrada hands down..
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 He'll be 27 next year, which is peak or slightly post-peak. Think about what would happen if every player improved every year. They'd end up in the same place. These players don't actually improve statistically until the age of 30 like many people believe. That's fair but we have also seen our share of anomolies like JD, Jose and Edwin who numbers improved dramatically when they were not very young. I don't have the same hopes for Pillar. I'm not saying players do not improve as they near 30. I'm saying we cannot expect players to improve as they near 30. It's a very critical distinction that people have a hard time grasping. Obviously, that's the very definition of "anomaly". It should not be expected. It the exception to the rule. Cant tell if you are being condescending in your post or not but I "grasp" the distinction.
nextyear Verified Member Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 Uh no, Pompey was a top 50 prospect heading into this year and is still 22. Devon Travis was the top prospect in the Detroit Tigers organization; I am not sure what number overall. However, Devon Travis has proved that he can consistently hit major league hitting but Pompey hasn't.

If that's the case it'll be those 3 plus Stroman anyway so who cares.

However, Devon Travis has proved that he can consistently hit major league hitting but Pompey hasn't. Pompey completely changed his approach when he was sent down to AA and has kept it since. Now, Pompey is a super high OBP guy with a much lower k-rate, and a high line-drive %. With his new approach, he as a much higher chance at coming in to 2016 and adjusting to the majors like Travis did this year. His ceiling is much higher than both Pillar and Revere and, if he's not traded in the off-season, should 100% start in the MLB OF for us entering 2016.

Stroman is not the 4th best starter and should pitch no later than 3rd to give us the best chance at winning 3 straight to sweep whomever we face in the ALDS.

Pompey definitely has more value than pre-2015 Travis that fetched the tigers anthony gose.

Meh. What difference does it make what Zaun thinks is my point. The only thing that matters is what actually happens.

He just said his 3 starters in the ALDS would be Price, Dickey, and Estrada hands down.. Zaun hates Stroman because: 1. He's a "rookie" 2. He's short and "his body won't be able to handle a full season of starts"
