WryNGinger Verified Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Seriously? Do they really need to make merchandise that simply says "Post Season" at this point? Wait a week or so and hopefully they can sell the AL Champ or even the AL East Champ merchandise. They are basically saying "holy f*** we actually made it to the Post Season" on product and trying to get people to buy it? Anyone that buys it is going to feel like a chump when they see people wearing AL Champ 2015 jerseys in a few weeks... They need to take on the "act like you have been there before" motto.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 A lot of fans probably don't know the difference or don't care as long as these items help them keep up with the bandwagon.
37stieb Verified Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Ah yes..... the bandwagon effect or marketing. Way too many people hyped about the jays so why exploit this. Hence the Post Season hats appear. I guess if waiting after winning the ALE Division or AL Division the they would lose money on Post Season merch.
500LevelSTH Verified Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 They are doing the same thing in every mlb town asap, not like the Jays are special. Just a money grab. Who cares, the more money spent now by casual fans cant hurt the payroll for next season.
pickoff22 Verified Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Well then I'm an idiot because I just walked down to the jays shop to buy a hat and hoodie. As a lifelong fan damn straight I'm buying it. And I'll probably buy the alds champs, Alcs champs and world series champs gear too
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 ^ this. Baseball is a business and if fans want to buy it...good for Rogers and MLB.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 This helps the Blue Jays make a lot of money. More money= better players, facilities etc.. for the Franchise. How can anyone be against this?
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 That's not true. Merchandise sales are shared among all 30 clubs. What it does do is help the Blue Jays build their brand. The more exposure people have to Blue Jays gear, the more games they will consume. -------------------------------------------- I agree with the OP's premise. I'd much rather wear a "2015 AL East Champs" shirt than a "2015 Postseason" shirt. I believe the Jays get to keep the revenue from the merch sales at the store inside the Stadium. So part of that is true.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 They're not forcing you to buy it...
pickoff22 Verified Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 I don't think that's true. From what I can find, all licensed goods sales are shared. They belong to MLB's "central revenue." It is shared, but I believe they share revenues based on the wholesale price, not the retail price. So obviously merchants like sportchek or Lids make a profit on those sales and although I don't know 100%, I think it's fair to assume the Jays shop also gets to capture the profit from the markup.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Hmm. I thought I remembered hearing that from somewhere. Revenue sharing innthe league is complex and the deal has probably changed occasionally
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 http://www.fangraphs.com/library/business/revenue-sharing/
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Hmmmm. Top 15 teams will be phased out of revenue sharing profits by 2016.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 By 2016, the fifteen teams in the largest markets in baseball will be disqualified from receiving revenue sharing. This feature is being phased in over the coming years. The disqualified clubs will receive a refund for the amount that they would have received in revenue sharing, although teams that have exceeded the Luxury Tax threshold in recent years will not receive a full refund.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Will the Jays be considered a top 15 market?
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Will the Jays be considered a top 15 market? easily. They are the 4th biggest city in NA.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 easily. They are the 4th biggest city in NA. Of course. I should have thought that over. I was figuring top 10 likely but wasn't sure. Also was wondering what if you have 2 teams in a city like NY Chicago and LA.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 From the CBA, page 223: Didn't realize STL was that small of a market. How is Miami that low too?
500LevelSTH Verified Member Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 They don't capture the profit from the mark-up, all licensed goods revenue is shared. Majestic buys the licensing for a jersey from MLB. Then they create a jersey and sell it to Sport Chek. Sport Chek then sells it for whatever they want and profit based on what they paid for it and what they sold it for. Meanwhile, Majestic will sell jerseys back to MLB, which will distribute them to Jays Shop, who will sell the jersey and give that revenue to MLB. I assume that MLB tells Jays Shop what to list the jerseys at. Jays Shop isn't really a separate entity. Here are some MLB definitions: Central revenue in the form of merchandise generated locally does not count as "local revenue" and is shared just as MLBAM revenues are. Just reading through this again.... In regards to revenues... Teams contribute only 34% of generated revenues that qualify to the central revenue fund. Otherwise there would be little benefit to operate a retail outlet at your venue for a 1/30th share of sales.
FirstPitchStrike Verified Member Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 Last Thursday my boss asked why I hadn't worn my Jays gear to work to like everyone else. I told her that I'd let the bandwangoners have their day. After 23 years of being laughed at for wearing my gear, you can bet your sweet ass that I'll be strutting in Thursday morning proud as a peacock wearing my The East is Ours tee.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 I don't see anything wrong with the Jays selling, or people buying AL East Champions gear. It's awesome and we should be enjoying it - not questioning it.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 So I bought that roots jacket thing. Impulse purchase. Regret it because I just realize I probably won't wear it enough to justify the $600.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 So I bought that roots jacket thing. Impulse purchase. Regret it because I just realize I probably won't wear it enough to justify the $600. If the Jays win the WS, get a banner, maybe some other merchandise, and have it all framed together. Would look great hanging on a wall. Cause, no, you're not going to wear it enough. Might as well package it so it looks pretty.
aselvana Verified Member Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 bought the jays fitted with postseason patch on the side. 60 after taxes, but my god its smells so fresh.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 Is this what you bought? Good lord sir. That's tuuuurible. You're correct - you'll never wear that. I do like the idea of putting in a large frame with a bunch of other swag (if we win). I did that following a trip to Day 4 of the Masters a couple of years ago. I bought a sweet picture from the pro shop of the 13th green, added our laminated passes and a couple of balls and it looks amazing. Framing cost like $600 though...

West Texas Forever Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 Is that you... 10 grand ain't much dude? What is 10 grand? Oh for a sale of a ticket? Yeah not enough for me to sell if that's what you're getting at.
