Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 I like this matchup for our lineup. He gives up his fair share of walks and we have a lot of patient hitters. Also the long ball has plagued him this season. No reason why we should not be able to put up 5+ runs on him.

baubau Verified Member Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Didn't see this posted but statcast broke down Pompey's 2 steals: http://m.mlb.com/video/v440044783/cletor-pompey-averages-21-mph-on-two-stolen-bases/?game_pk=415619 dang, kid has a great 1st step and runs fast! Also on that second steal, the one Gomes didn't throw at, was a bs strike call on Pillar. Either Gomes is the greatest framer ever or that ump was hanging out drinking with Buck before the game.

Statscast is a great tool in theory but it will never look like much more than a gimmick if they don't put the numbers in better context. I know that they are somewhat limited by the video replay format but putting something like X% above average in parentheses next to the number would make the numbers mean more to the viewer.

True enough and I agree. I was just more impressed by his speed noted.

Yeah it's cool that you had enough context to put the number in context and I don't want to come off snarky. It's just hard for me to share your enthusiasm when I don't know anything about what a good foot speed or a good first step generally is. I basically just have to use the eye test to assume the numbers displayed are very good. Getting back to the topic on hand, Pompey looks like one of those guys who could be very valuable without ever being an exceptional hitter through a combination of base running and defense (which isn't to say that he might not also be an above average hitter as well but he at least should have a decent floor regardless). Really cool player who is easy to forget because the team has done so well without him.

Statcast has taught me that one day Chapman's arm is going to fly off with ball still in hand traveling at 107 mph getting fouled off by Stanton with an exit velocity of 120mph hitting an innocent kid in the front row eating ice cream where his cone's exit speed is 0.25 seconds hitting his mother in the face at 3' distance for a trending now viral video on mlb.com
