Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 He's had five years to make the playoffs. We don't live in a vacuum of one year. GM is a results-based job, if he can't make the playoffs in five years, that's on him. He's had his shot, he's been given massive payroll spending compared to his predecessors. You can blame it on the players if we miss, but you can't blame five years of no-playoffs on a GM getting bad luck. If the 2013 team was healthy, they would have made the playoffs for sure.

nmrch Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 If the 2013 team was healthy, they would have made the playoffs for sure. Uhm, we lost the division by 23 games! Bad luck had little to do with what happened that season.
metafour Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 Also for the record, AA was handed a pretty good big league team, coming off an 86 win year. Granted they still finished 4th but you don't get to excuse the first two years because they're rebuilding years when the decision to rebuild was AA's in teh first place. He could have easily chosen to retool and tried to compete with Halladay. MAybe we wouldn't have been better off(although the ultimate return on the Halladay trade suggests that we would have) but AA made an active choice to tear it down, it was not inevitable. The decision was not AA's. Rogers invested a lot of money on Ricciardi's last ditch spending spree. When those moves flopped and the team failed, they fired Ricciardi and brought in a young upstart with zero GM experience. You think they hired him and told him "sure, keep piling salary onto this roster"? It was obvious that they wanted a rebuild, otherwise they would have hired a more established veteran GM if their plan was to keep progressing with what Ricciardi left. Beeston's 5-year FA stipulation assured that he couldn't go crazy in FA even if he wanted to add to an ageing Halladay, and Ricciardi left a s***-heap minor league system which meant that he couldn't trade for MLB help either.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 One 90 win season(knock on wood!) in 5 years and a bottom 10 farm system. For every Donaldson trade there's a Syndergaard trade and for every Travis trade there's a Gomes trade. A GM isn't just responsible for the sucess of the big league club in a given year. If we were to rank how every organization did in the last 5 years, not just in wins and playoff success but also accumulation of assets and getting value for the buck, do you think the Jays would be in the top 15 ? I somehow doubt it. Just because AA's successes have been backloaded doesn't mean he deserves an extention. Shapiro should be given complete freedom to hire who ever he wants. AA hasn't done enough to be given immunity under new management. If you were to look at team evaluations with Major league team+farm system included the Jays would easily be top 10 right now top 5 even. If a GM had to pick a team to go to without factoring ownership, payroll and all that top 5 would probably be: Astros Pirates Cubs Blue Jays Cardinals/Red Sox/Giants
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 IIRC, Halladay was pressing for a trade before AA was even hired.
ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 If I'm Mark Shapiro and I see what AA has done this year, he's staying. If the Jays flop for the next 2-3 years he can fire AA and argue that it wasn't his guy to begin with and bring in someone else. Win-win.

This guy even went on to name who would be taking over the Presidential role for the Indians, so either he's going all-in with the ********/guesses, or he actually knows something.

Yeah the confidence he has kinda makes me think a bit. He's all in like you said. He's definitely not making s*** up for attention, I just hope his source is accurate.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 IIRC, Halladay was pressing for a trade before AA was even hired. And the Jays didn't win 86 games in 2009 either which was part of the reason trading Halladay was discussed during the 2009 season after it was learned Halladay would not sign an extension.
