Goins has officially stuck.

I literally came down stairs to start a thread in dedication to the 2 year anniversary of the "Can Ryan Goins Stick" thread.

Mods can you open it up again for the day?

I'm happy with Goins. His approach has tremendously improved and almost never swings at a pitch out of the zone. He has gone from a terribly abysmal offensive player to a decent 9th hitter

Agree. Like him better right now than Pennington.

Who are the new mods

O2's two brothers. Just teaching them how to use a computer. Going to take a few more days.

I wonder how Goins suddenly started to recognize balls out of the strike zone so well? It was almost like someone turned on a light switch and now he can recognize pitches and where they are going - https://www.coachup.com/resources/baseball/hitting-tips-the-spin-of-the-ball#close.

Was it good coaching from Brook Jacoby? Most likely, in my opinion.

Interesting comment by Buck last night. He said the coaching staff goes over the strike zone percentages for the opposing starter every night... that is they take a look at all his pitches and tell the hitters the percentage of time it is in the strike zone. High for fastballs, low for everything else everything.

I think Buck gave a stat that some guys slider is only in the strike zone 20% of the time... something like that. Anyway the Jays coaches, Jacoby and the rest make sure the Jays hitter know this stuff.

It's hard to recognize a slider, let alone recognize if it is a good one (at least for a Goins, the great hitters are better)... so I wonder if the Jays are coaching guys to just auto-take if they recognize an off speed pitch, from a pitcher who doesn't get them in the zone.

Most likely Goins has just decided to stop swinging so much. As in, plainly taking more pitches early in the count. I doubt his actual pitch recognition ability has improved. It's also possible/likely that there is some randomness here; maybe pitchers have inexplicably had control trouble over the past two months when facing Goins.

This is actually pretty interesting. I'm always looking up how often a starter's breaking ball is in the zone. Would be a very relevant thing for batters to know too.

His zone contact % is really high during this stretch as well. I think its a bit of both though tbh. Just by watching you can tell some of the walks have been by pitchers being terrible while there have been some good Abs as well.

Lots of talk of Goins' changes to his stance. Could certainly help with with recognition if his new swing is more efficient and if he has less movement.

I don't know what he is doing differently...but whatever it is....keep it up! I like watching him on 0 and D now. Shocker.

BB% = 2.6% 2014 to 9.8% this season

He is actually starting to looking like that "established MLB player" Gruber92 is always talking about. (which I scoffed at and hope to eat my words over)
