GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 (edited) think of stuff and stuff - Do extreme ground ball pitchers give up more infield hits, in same way extreme fly pitcher pitchers get more infield flies? - Do players play better or worse in the years before and after the Blue Jays? - Single-start SwStr% patterns - Explain how a good closer can actually be as value as a mid-rotation starter, after accounting for leverage - Patterns in managers who beat Pythagorean expectation (could be written from Gibbons point of view) - Do pitchers pitch differently after errors than they do after other balls in play or following bad umpire calls? - Count-leveraged zone percentage - Quantifying the batted ball bias in ERA - What do the Jays do with Osuna next year - Dickey's option - Gibbons (optimal lineups, times through order, RP usage) - Fantasy Flashpoint - Sequencing Edited August 25, 2015 by GD

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 What do the Jays do with Osuna next year.. SP or RP ? Possible talking points would be the obvious, how well he's done as the closer, but also how much of a waste it would be if he could be at least a #3 SP. Buuuuut with his innings pitched issues, would he even be able to pitch as a starter next year for more than 110 innings? And if not, is it worth the trouble trying to convert him back?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Author Posted August 19, 2015 That would be a good topic for an article. I've seen NJH say the rule of conversion is generally 17% (better SP to RP, worse RP to SP). Could be wrong though

I've seen NJH say the rule of conversion is generally 17% (better SP to RP, worse RP to SP). Could be wrong though Tango/MGL talked about this recently, probably on the Tango blog. I believe it is indeed 17%. They should definitely try Osuna as a starter. If he started in the minors this year (beginning at Dunedin or New Hampshire), he'd probably be a call-up candidate right now as a starter. So they wouldn't really be rushing him. The issue is just that he'll be 21 and doesn't have many pro innings.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Author Posted August 19, 2015 Delabar strengthening program might be useful
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 GD, can you edit the initial post with the ideas suggested? I like the idea of an "idea board."
baubau Verified Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Already getting ahead of myself but I was thinking about writing on the pen. I'll piggy back some info from the Loup article as I'll likely do one individually for each player in the pen. Figured it would be a good one considering the pen was heavily discussed coming into this year.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 Someone could churn out a "Liam Hendriks is just as good as Roberto Osuna" article pretty quickly. You'd only need 700 words and people would find it compelling.

Have them both up by middle of next week-ish again?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 I'm getting the article on estrada going... wife broke her foot so my free time is pretty limited right now as I'm pretty much at her beck and call
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Someone could write a hot take about the Travis-Sportsnet suit thing. Would get plenty of clicks.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2015 Author Posted August 27, 2015 I wonder where Luis Rivera lies among 3rd base coaches. Last or second last?
baubau Verified Member Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 He's so bad I'm surprised that Hale isn't paid to be both the bench coach and 3rd base coach. Also I'll work on a Sanchez article? Him in the pen or rotation. Should hopefully have it up next week. Seems like a popular choice. I could even make this with Osuna. Osuna vs Sanchez, who should start and be in the pen.

NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 I just wrote a Sanchez article about him in the pen vs. rotation! I think an article about Osuna's future could be good. It's pretty obvious to anyone smart that Osuna has a better shot than Sanchez as a starter. So maybe a could article could be breaking down Osuna and explaining that he has three pitches and good control.

baubau Verified Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 I just wrote a Sanchez article about him in the pen vs. rotation! Well this is awkward. Clearly you'll have to delete your article so I can post mine. I think an article about Osuna's future could be good. GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Author Posted August 31, 2015 Baubau/North, whichever will need something to write about, would either of you like to break down Shapiro's transaction history in depth? Of course my article was an easy content piece, but Hurl raised the idea of going more in-depth on his history.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Do we do pre-Spring Training recaps? If there's interest from you guys I wouldn't mind putting together a listicle of the new names we'll be hearing on the team this year, along with a brief breakdown of their (potential) respective roles. Anybody willing can also add some advanced analysis to each player's blurb.

Still, as a creative writing outlet it could still be used. I mean it's there - a functioning platform that some people might read if you link it from here or Reddit or whatever. I'm not really sure why it failed. I guess blogging is just more of a commitment than everyone thought. We had like, 9 different people involved here at different times and everyone had their own specific reasons to stop doing it. Edited February 11, 2016 by Laika

I was considering starting a blog on Saber Resource too to complement its other features. We still get regular daily views so if GD or baubau were interested in sharing their thoughts to an audience, Breaking Blue is still probably a good place to do that. I could help them out with ideas and such. An immediate idea would be to update our Top 600 Dynasty Assets concept; I could definitely assist GD in putting the list together and cede the credit.

Launching a new blog on your saber resource site is probably the best bet to recapture any kind of traction, but you'd need to manage the release of content well to hold interest. Releasing 5 articles in 3 days and then nothing for 3 weeks is awful. I think that the sporadic releases, and rushed, poorly written breaking news type of articles really hurt BB. That and losing JFaS.

That and losing JFaS. Well there was never an "editor" or anything like that. It was just a scattershot attempt at making something. JFaS leaving was the big blow. But the blog never had much focus; it tried to be too many things. We had a couple of heavy hitting analytics guys (who were too good to stick around), ace trying to write about prospects (and basically ripping people off, unfortunately), other random people writing random things spanning from news recaps and tidbits to long form essays. I was (am) the type of person who would rather write one in depth article a week than 4 little breaking news / recap articles. I blame my own apathy in part for the blog completely dying. I want to write things from time to time (baseball and non-baseball) but it feels like a total waste to put it on the blog.

That and losing JFaS. Saber Resource was going to depend on its up-to-date stats and graphics for traction (easier to publish new content when it's done automatically) and then the blog would be for the longer research pieces that I managed to squeeze out every couple weeks and was interested in writing. You do see successful infrequent blogs. This blog would be in better shape if it had other features to prop it up. Also, like NJH, I find the news/recap articles hard to write since they're mindless and don't help me develop in the long run. We ostensibly are trying to create a more analytical Blue Jays Plus, but are completely different fans from the ones at that site.
