ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 Report: Rockies SS Reyes clears waivers Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes has reportedly cleared waivers. CBS' Jon Heyman reported Friday that the 32-year-old has passed through waivers unclaimed is now eligible to be traded to any other major league club. Acquired from Toronto prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline in the deal that sent Troy Tulowitzki to the Blue Jays, Reyes has posted a .274 average with 37 runs batted-in over 82 combined games with the two clubs this season. Heyman reported that one team believed to be interested in Reyes' services is the New York Yankees, who could certainly afford the $55 million remaining on the shortstop's contract through the end of the 2017 season. Reyes recently returned to New York with the Rockies to play the Mets, with whom he spent the first nine seasons of his career. There he expressed a desire to once again play for a contender, saying "At this point, I just want to win. No matter what people say, or whatever people think. I'm at the point in my career where I want to win," per the CBS report. National League batting champion in 2011, Reyes has played 13 MLB seasons with the Mets, Rockies, Blue Jays and Miami Marlins. He possesses a .290 career average with 1,865 hits. http://www.tsn.ca/report-rockies-ss-reyes-clears-waivers-1.345488 Imagine if he ended up a Yankee?
baubau Verified Member Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 I hope he ends up a Yankee. His dumb errors throwing games away will help this team.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 Imagine if he ended up a Yankee? Would be weird to play against him but nice to be on the receiving end of the outs he gives away.
ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted August 14, 2015 Author Posted August 14, 2015 It would be funny if they got him for say Sunday's game, and he tripped on the turf and rolled his ankle. Well not funny...but the irony would be kind of delicious.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 If they ate 40% of that contract teams will bite
flafson Verified Member Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 Were there ever a situation where a player played for both world series teams in the same year? Meaning he's going to get a ring no matter which team wins? That would be funny.

ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted August 14, 2015 Author Posted August 14, 2015 Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes has cleared waivers, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, making him eligible to be traded to any team. Heyman hears that “at least a couple of teams” have been “poking around” regarding Reyes, but the Rockies aren’t necessarily shopping him around. There’s been at least some contact with the Yankees about a possible Reyes matchup, Heyman reports, though it’s not known how serious their interest is. Didi Gregorius has been outstanding for much of the summer, hitting .290/.329/.383 dating back to June 1 to go along with his strong defensive work. Reyes could be viewed as a second base option by the Yankees, who have received little from their primary option at the position, Stephen Drew. Reyes, 32, was hitting reasonably well at the time of the stunner that sent him and three pitching prospects from Toronto to Denver in exchange for Troy Tulowitzki and LaTroy Hawkins, but he’s struggled greatly in his new environs. Reyes is hitting just .216/.241/.275 with the Rox — a sharp decline from the .285/.322/.385 he was slashing with the Blue Jays. From a defensive standpoint, Reyes has declined over the past two seasons, so it’s possible that some clubs would think of him more as a second base option than a shortstop anyhow. (Although, getting off the turf in Toronto could revitalize his legs and back to some extent.) Given the substantial financial commitment still remaining on Reyes contract, it’s unsurprising to see him go unclaimed. He’s still owed about $6.37MM of this year’s $22MM salary, and he’ll earn $22MM in both 2016 and 2017, plus a $4MM buyout of a $22MM option for the 2018 season. All told, that’s about $54.37MM owed to Reyes through the 2017 season. For what it’s worth, Heyman hears that while Reyes spoke highly of the Mets this weekend and seems to be amenable to a return to New York City, the Mets did not show any interest in reacquiring him following his move to Colorado. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/08/jose-reyes-clears-waivers-yankees.html

Wishing an injury on someone is not what baseball is about.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 Can't see the Yankees wanting him, Gregorius has been quite good. The idea (not necessarily a good idea but whatever) is to move him to 2B.

That being said, he played hard, when he could. Wishing an injury on someone is not what baseball is about. Not saying I hope it happens. But if gets traded away from playing on the turf, and gets traded to the Yankees and his first game is on the turf and he gets hurt...it would be ironic.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 I wonder how much money Colordo would have to eat to move him for nothing. $10M? $20M?
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 I really kinda feel bad for Reyes at this point, as much as I can feel bad for someone who's made $92M in his career.
Nafro Verified Member Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 (edited) I wonder how much money Colordo would have to eat to move him for nothing. $10M? $20M? I would guess it will be somewhere between the two figures, if they want anything back for him. I would guess they don't have to eat anything, if they are willing to trade him for one or two, high risk, mid ceiling lower level prospects. Edited August 14, 2015 by Nafro Poor proof-reading
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 Yes I can't remember the player though but that has happened Bengie Molina in 2010 for sure. Traded to Texas from the Giants.
Swervin81 Verified Member Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 Yes I can't remember the player though but that has happened Yeah, it's definitely happened before. I believe a player traded from the Rangers to the Cardinals in 2011 when that was the year they met in the WS. EDIT: Yup, it was Arthur Rhodes.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 Reyes to the Orioles.... LOL
Dr Negative Verified Member Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 The idea (not necessarily a good idea but whatever) is to move him to 2B. I don't think the Yankees are that dumb. They didn't let Cano go just to pay Reyes 22 m to play a mediocre 2B. I'd rather just take a shot on Utley for 2 months to see if he could have one last hurrah hitting in Yankee Stadium, then reevaluate in the offseason.
