Moving forward I'm pretty concerned about our last two spots in the rotation - Estrada and Hutchison.

Estrada is not this good. So far he's had an abnormally good fly ball rate and fly ball/HR rate. However, I don't think he's going to s*** the bed so much that he will be kicked out of the rotation.

Hutchison, however, worries me. His numbers show that he has been very unlucky, but when you actually watch his starts, he's serving up a ton of meatballs. The only thing I can give Hutchison credit for is that he doesn't seem unfazed by it.

But what if we get an injury? We are due for one, honestly.

The only options that come to mind are Randy Wolf, Scott Copeland and Jeff Francis.

It would have been great if we could have kept Norris and shipped out Pompey instead, but whatever.

Do you think it is possible that the Jays could entertain putting Sanchez back in the rotation? He may need 3 starts though. Remember, before Sanchez got injured he threw 8 innings of 1 run ball

Estrada is not this good.

With the exception of 2014, he's actually been this good for awhile.

2015 - 3.40 ERA, 3.83 FIP

2013 - 3.87 ERA, 3.86 FIP

2012 - 3.64 ERA, 3.35 FIP

He's a solid back-end starter with a good K rate.

The obvious solution is to trade for James Shields and bump Hutch out of the rotation until next year, when he can compete for a spot in ST.

If they're not going to use Hendriks in a set-up capacity, may as well see if he can keep his regained effectiveness in longer spurts. They've used him for two innings a fair bit, but I wonder if he could be sub-4.00 ERA pitcher in 5-6 inning stints.

Jeff Francis could probably be not awful as a major league starter right now. Sanchez is a bad starter and that he allowed 1 run in the start before getting injured provides next to no information.

Estrada and Hutch are fine but yeah the team is pretty exposed to injury. Especially if Copeland has priority over the other AAA guys. Losing Norris, Boyd and Doubront hurt the team's depth.

Sanchez finished off with plenty of good starts

5 of his last 6 starts were quality starts and his walk rate showed signs of stabilizing.

Let me see!!

1-Sanchez

2-Wolf

3-Francis

4-Jenkins

Jenkins is currently a reliever, so he'd have to be stretched out too.

if only we still had Norris...

Hutch out and out is lucky his run support is the only thing that has kept him in the majors. His luck is going to run out as the jays start to play big hitting teams with shut down pitching like NYY. Hutch is the weak spot. Estrada will do fine.

You selected that sample and the statistic used dishonestly, though. I could say that 5 of his last 11 starts were quality starts... and quality starts are not a great predictor of future performance (the context we're using here). His total season stats as a starter provide weighty evidence of a poor skillset.

I selected that sample because it is relevant that he started off the year like s*** and then progressed and improved. It would be a different story if I selected random starts from different points in the season.

Actually he's better than this.

SIERA xFIP

2011 3.28 3.58

2012 3.26 3.48

2013 3.43 3.63

2014 3.9 4.19

2015 4.34 4.6

Gross! Worst SP depth in the majors? Has to be.

Exactly, you selected the sample and the statistic because they showed Sanchez in the best light. You started with the premise that Sanchez was a decent starter now and set out to find the best factoid you could that alluded to that. Instead, you should ask objectively (without making a conclusion before looking at the data) "how good of a starting pitcher is Aaron Sanchez?" and then look at the entire body of evidence we have, and use the statistics that we know are the most reliable indicators of true talent.

Sanchez's pitching at the start of the year matters almost as much as his last few starts, in terms of established what his likely true-talent level as a starter is. It happened and those starts count. Ignoring them is foolish.

you really are nit picky and overanalyze things.

I'm just trying to get closer to the truth. Using samples specifically chosen to prove a point is deceptive and ignores pertinent information.

Depth sept 1:

Stroman

shields

I think it's doubtful Stroman returns as a starter. I'm hoping he's Tim Lincecum out of the bullpen in 2012 (or whenever he was dominate in that role)

I expect AA is working his tail off to grab another Doubront (or better) off the waiver wire to help the depth. I also wouldn't be shocked to see a claim/trade made.

I agree ... although I expect the starting pitcher that he claims/trades for will be much better than a #5/6

Some guy called into Dean Blundell this morning and said they should make Mark Lowe a starter. It was awesome.

Does Dean Blundell even know who Mark Lowe is?

I believe Dean's response was that Lowe is one of the best relievers in baseball. At that point, I regrettably flipped the channel back to Rock 95 and shook my head at how awful the radio choices are these days.

Solution: 4-man rotation:

1. Rental guy, might as well make the best use of him

2. Old-ass durable guy

3. Old-ass knuckleballer that hasn't been pitching atrociously lately

4. Who cares

5. No shortage of days off. The Jays have 53 games left versus 55-56 for all their closest rivals. I'm sure it's feasible short of any other solutions.

Doesn't Hutch only have 4 on the year.....such a terrible pitcher. His stats prove he shouldn't be in the Majors, much less on a contending rotation.

I like the Edge's morning show these days but might be a bit nerdy for some. Dean Blundell knows nothing about sports which made him a pretty odd choice for the FAN.
