I really don't understand why no team would claim him. I know he's expensive, but there's some teams (like the Yankees) that could desperately use him.

I'm more surprised the Dodgers didn't claim him than the Yankees. But I agree the Yankees are a close second. The Mets would have been real interesting as well.

If shields has already cleared waivers, it's difficult to see a deal getting done now. If they weren't willing to get him for just money, I find it unlikely thye would part with the kind of prospects San Diego would want if San Diego was going to pay any of his salary.

Maybe time to revive this thread. Padres looking for SP in return and may be willing to pay part of salary remaining.

Sheilds is still putting up 200 innings of decent starts. He is still healthy, and the remainder of his contract is only 3 years.

To sign any of the 2nd tier SP on the FA market right now, it may take more years and more $$ to sign one, plus they may not end up producing any more than Shields.

Dickey or Hutch back may get the job done?

Oh gawd, Hutch and salary relief??? I'd make that trade in a heartbeat. Which means it's too 1-sided.

He's 34 this season, I mean it's not horribly one sided. They signed Shields for nothing.

I agree with your assessment that Sheilds is a very attractive offer to many teams, especially considering the cost right now for pitchers. Which is why I think the Padres will be smart about the situation and wait. They can just start a bidding war form the teams that missed out on the big name pitchers (Giants/Dodgers, Cardinals, Jays and others). I can see them getting more than a 40-year old knuckleballer who may retire at season's end and a pitcher who has taken a step back to the point of not even being considered a part of a big league rotation.

If the Padres even agree to eat some $$ in his contract that makes it even more attractive and could interest other teams to join the bidding as well (*ahem* Boston, cause they still have prospects left and DD is somewhat dumn). If the Jays hope to make a competitive offer for Sheilds I imagine it will start with one of Pompey or Osuna and go up from there.

We can't eat that salary, more likely Dickey for Shields.

It doesn't match well, but how about Revere and Hutch for Shields. Revere's salary off the books makes that a $13M salary for 2016. Then we have a Pompey/Pillar/JB outfield. We can grab a guy like Joey Butler as the 4th guy.

Stroman/Shields/Estrada/Dickey and Happ is very okay.
