Do you want me to explain why Norris, Boyd, Sanchez, Osuna, etc, are not realistic rotation options for 2016 or can you actually figure it out yourself? I'm not expecting you to, but thought I'd ask just to be nice.

Actually - I'd love an explanation. Will we need to add another reliable arm if MB and Estrada both leave? Sure, but I see no reason why a couple of them won't/can't stick in the rotation next year. I guess you didn't think Stroman was a realistic option for the rotation in 2014 too right?

A core of Stroman, Sanchez, Osuna, Norri, Estrada and possibly Buerhle or Dickey isn't a bad starting point for next year. It would be nice to pick up a Tyson Ross or Andrew Cashner type to help stabilize the rotation for the remainder of this year and the next few years though.

I have to admit if AA makes absolutely no upgrade to the rotation before the deadline I will be disappointed. WIth this teams offence all a GM needs to do is assemble a passable rotation and BP and we should be very competitive.

I would place a 65% chance of AA doing something considered substantial, 30% chance that he makes a move we don't consider all that substantial (ex. Gallardo) and 5% he does nothing.

I think from what we know about AA when making trades, he likes to acquire players/pitchers with control. I still think they would take Kennedy, Leake, Iwakuma or Shark at the right price, though I'm sure he's probably a lot more focused on acquiring guys like Ross, Shields, Fiers etc right.

I'd f***ing splurge for Felix Hernandez right now or in the offseason. Seattle has been a disappointment over the last several years and if they make changes in their front office, I'm sure we'll see changes to the roster. King Felix is owed a whole lot of money, though he's under control through 2019 with a weird club option for 2020 for only 1M if he spends time more than 130 days on the DL "with right elbow surgery or other procedure to repair right elbow injury."

2016: 25.8 M

2017: 26.8 M

2018: 26.8 M

2019: 27.8 M

Signing a FA pitcher like Hernandez or lets say Price this upcoming offseason likely would demand a Scherzer type contract, which we all admit is crazy and foolish. Felix locked at 4 years at that high AAV isn't all that bad, since you'd still own him before any significant decline. The Jays will have money coming off the books in 2016 with MB and if they don't exercise the RA Dickey option (likely will pick it up now with the way he has been pitching).

Also, why not work a deal around EE + prospects for King Felix? EE likely won't be around past 2016 in Toronto and the Jays already have the best lineup in baseball. The Mariners might be interested in that since EE gives them another power bat and improves their lineup greatly for 2016, plus they will get a compensation pick if he leaves as a FA. Something like the Tulo deal perhaps, where the Mariners get some other top prospects in the deal as well. Plus, Seattle rids themselves of King Felix's contract and open up a huge amount of payroll for future FA signings etc. And it won't be difficult signing pitchers to pitch half their games at Safeco.

A 2016 rotation:

Felix

Stroman

Hutchison

Dickey

FA signing or Norris (if they don't trade him)

Estrada is an FA in 2 months and not getting a $15MM qualifying offer. However, it sounds like he likes it here and most other teams might see him as strictly a reliever option. So there's a good chance he still wants to re-sign for cheap knowing he probably has a slot in the rotation here.

Counting on any combination of Norris, Boyd, Sanchez and Osuna to replace the ~550 innings left behind by MB, Estrada and Dickey is setting yourself up for failure and will lead to an overworked and ineffective bullpen.

Norris has regressed badly in AAA. He still has potential but you can't seriously pencil him in for 2016 until you see the results change. Boyd is a fringe starter or reliever depending on who you ask. Sanchez is likely a reliever long-term, and his JPA level ignorance when it comes to his walk rate tells me he may not change his approach regardless. Osuna will hit his career high as a pro in innings pitched and that will come as a reliever. He will probably need to be on a pretty strict innings limit next season if they stretch him out. None of those guys are where Stroman was prior to 2014 and none of them should be counted on to fill rotation spots in 2016. Maybe mid-season 2016 for Norris if his numbers improve but not to start the season.

If the Jays want to compete next season, then they either need three starters or two starters + bring Dickey back. Repeating the same crap they did in the beginning of this year by starting 10 rookies on the team won't fly.

Exactly, so why talk about employing one 8 months in advance. Bring some guys into camp and let competition decide who the #5 starter will be.

Because right now the guys coming to camp are competing for slots #3, #4, #5... We only have Hutch & Stroman as sure arms in the rotation at the moment. I have a hard time believing Sanchez, Norris, Osuna will fill the other spots if one of Buehrle or Dickey don't return. We also lack depth behind those arms. At the right price, Estrada's a capable 5th starter for this team, as a 1.5-2 WAR pitcher.

Source: #SFGiants pessimistic on Price. All signs point to #BlueJays. Deal between DET and TOR is close, per @JonHeymanCBS.

Correction, 100% chance AA does something substantial
