And he's also moving to a league where he can DH frequently, and he'll be under contract when the turf is gone.

Having Tulo DH once or twice a week will be huge. As well, Tulo has said in the past that he understand he might have to move off of shortstop someday, so having him lets say make that transition to 1B, LF or DH down the road will definitely be a lot easier than lets say telling Reyes he needs to move off to a different position. Plus, Tulo's bat will play anywhere.

He would get a retarded amount of money, but the question isn't what he'd get, but what you'd be comfortable giving him. I wouldn't pay him more than the 5/100 we just got him for.

I'm sure the Yankees would bid crazy on him if he was a FA this offseason.

I see no reason he can't hack it at SS until Donaldson leaves in FA. Then move him to 3B.

only reason it's different is that the Jays are a lot closer right now and that they gave up that $44M over the next two years. But the upgrade was much smaller this time as well. I don't disagree with any team making a 1 win half season upgrade and 2 win potentially the next year. But the upgrade is also another Right Handed bat that has a declining ISO and rising K-Rates and is about to hit the age where those numbers decline at the greatest rate. The positive thing is that his FB rates are actually going up. Tulo is a great hitter and he might see more fastballs in this lineup so the move might slowdown that K-rate increase as well.

Like I say I understand the trade, and even just playing one Wild Card game it makes sense for the Jays. I'd even go as far as calling the Jays the WS favourite next year.

I'd agree in being wait and see with this trade if Reyes hadn't gone the other way. Tulo had a really weird start to the year but he's been progressively getting back to being his old self, plus I can buy in to the fact that he performed worse because he hated playing for Colorado. This move pushed me to go to the game tomorrow and I'm sure a lot of other people too. Hopefully Rogers sees the immediate returns and gives the OK to take Shields or Hamels.

What exactly our AA's goals though? We're not going to win the division this year. Is he trying to secure a WC this year? Is he planning for the future? Or is he just trying to put an entertaining offense together to sell seats?

Wild Card this year and division next, I'm assuming.

Well, I'm sure he thinks they still have a shot at the division this year, and maybe they do with all the H2H games against the Yankees, but that's the mother of all long shots at this point.

Reyes is coming off serious issues too though, and the Blue Jays are moving him off of turf. The injury questions are somewhat neutralized by moving Reyes, whose contract could become even more crippling with an injury.

Also, there may not even be turf for half of Tulo's contract lol

I think the key in my mind is that Reyes has played in a significantly higher amount of games than Tulo (114 more games since 2012) despite being a year and a half older, and he's got two less years on his contract. While Tulo has been more valuable than Reyes over that time despite playing in fewer games, I still feel like we traded Jose Reyes 2015 for Jose Reyes 2013. That's easily a good trade in a vacuum but is it worth the price of Hoffman/Castro considering what they might be able to get you in this market for a pitcher?

I'm not questioning what Hoffman and Castro might turn into, and whether or not their inclusion in this deal is justified, I just think that they could have been used for a greater need.

Same, I don't think he'll have to move off the position for a couple of years at least.

His contract is not that bad considering the money being thrown around these days on top FA bats. As a FA lets say this offseason, what do you think Tulo would get?

probably right around 5 years $100M, using HanRam as the reference point.

AA strikes again. I expected an out of left field move from him this year, but certainly not for a position player. Exciting times.

Why would Tulo not be in the lineup tonight? He's coming from Chicago after all.

FWIW, in a hypothetical trade where we pick up Shields ($10M) and Kimbrel ($9M), we'd only be adding about $7.2M in prorated salary for the rest of the season. That's not very far beyond the known payroll space (~$5M), and there's an easy business case to be made for a bit of added salary, given where we are on the win curve. This can also be mitigated if we pawn Navarro ($1.9M remaining) or Saunders ($1.1M) off on them.

No team was signing HanRam to play SS though.

Yeah, I guess

Hanley is an oft injured NOT shortstop who can rake. Tulo is the same, but IS a shortstop. I think he'd get more for sure.

I wouldn't be comfortable paying Tulo much more than 5/100 based on reservations about his health and how that is affecting and will continue to affect his performance. So I see the deal as two parts:

Taking on Tulo's contract

Paying Hoffman, Castro, and the other guy to get rid of Reyes.

I don't have a strong opinion either way.

Is this confirmed? I'd really like to know... hopefully Tulo can get here soon enough.

Just what I read

yes I admit that the situation might have affected him...if he gets back to the 5 WAR SS this is a clear win. I just don't like some of his warning signs (a lot pretty similar to Reyes). I think finally getting Tulo in fantasy starting just last year has soured me on him slightly. I think the next three days should be very interesting in Blue Jays world. Last time AA did this I hated the follow up move...this time if there isn't one it takes away from the Tulo move.

Davidi said it early last night but I would wait for further confirmation to know too

I got him in fantasy this year too. He was crap in April and May but he's been almost vintage since iirc.

Tulo seems awesome but I haven't really seen him play TBH. With the injuries, I just hope AA did his due dilegence and scouted him fully... he's not been himself this year... should we expect the same going forward or is there some regression expected?
