is he correcting his mistake or making the exact same mistake again? This deal and all from this point until probably next year are about making the playoffs. If they don't make the playoffs this is a very negative type move.

This is not the same as the Marlins trade. Come on Hurl.

You called him overhyped.. Don't go all strawman on me

He's literally the last thing from overhyped right now, you can see it clearly ITT hes being quite underrated

Yes I believe his value in the trade has surpassed his actual value in my opinion

It might be very similar. Is Tulo a 5-win monster or injury prone 2-3 win guy with a bad hip?

Jon Morosi

#BlueJays press conference set for 1 pm, per @FAN590. Wonder what they'll talk about . . . #Tulo

Morosi said the Jays are talking to the Padres about Kennedy.

Is Tulo any more injury-prone than Reyes at this point?

Kennedy has 2HR/9 playing in San Diego, probably not a great fit here.

I doubt that's also sustainable.

EDIT: Lol yeah a 21% HR/FB rate.

It's not, but he's still homer-prone. I'd rather target Ross, Cashner, Shields, Fiers, Iwakuma. I wouldn't mind Kennedy, assuming he's really cheap, but he's not a front of rotation type.

No of course not. If the Jays can get him in a package with shields, that'd be gravy, and he's a much needed upgrade over Doubront.

I would as well :) though I'm sure they are much more expensive. If they can get Kennedy for like nothing, he's an upgrade over FD at the back of the rotation.

I'm with BTS and Hurl here (if I didn't misinterpret their points), I think it's a decent move, but this isn't exactly the Donaldson deal. I don't think this is a slam-dunk win trade, and Tulowitzki could easily become an albatross.

As big of a fan that I am of Hoffman (it wouldn't surprise me if we someday look back on keeping Norris over Hoffman as keeping Sanchez over Syndergaard) I'm not upset that we gave him up here. I just have to question whether or not he could have been moved in a deal for something the Jays needed more.

I think I'm neutral on this trade until we see what other moves are made.

Tulo can lose 1/3 of the season and still be a 5 WAR player

Tulo posted a 5.3 WAR in only 91 games last season.

I'm kind of amazed that Hawkins still throws 95 mph at nearly 43 years old... he could legitimately help our BP

Not really. With inflation, his contract has become quite palatable, and the cost/win is only going up.

only reason it's different is that the Jays are a lot closer right now and that they gave up that $44M over the next two years. But the upgrade was much smaller this time as well. I don't disagree with any team making a 1 win half season upgrade and 2 win potentially the next year. But the upgrade is also another Right Handed bat that has a declining ISO and rising K-Rates and is about to hit the age where those numbers decline at the greatest rate. The positive thing is that his FB rates are actually going up. Tulo is a great hitter and he might see more fastballs in this lineup so the move might slowdown that K-rate increase as well.

Like I say I understand the trade, and even just playing one Wild Card game it makes sense for the Jays. I'd even go as far as calling the Jays the WS favourite next year.

His contract is not that bad considering the money being thrown around these days on top FA bats. As a FA lets say this offseason, what do you think Tulo would get?

What exactly our AA's goals though? We're not going to win the division this year. Is he trying to secure a WC this year? Is he planning for the future? Or is he just trying to put an entertaining offense together to sell seats?

Yeah I don't think it's a crippling contract, but I do think it could become an irritating nuisance like the Romero deal.

It should be noted that Tulo's only played in 351 games since 2012, he's coming off a serious surgery in 2014, and he's moving onto turf.

Leake, Fiers, Hamels, Shields, Rubby De La Rosa?, Price, Carrasco, Samardzija, Iwakuma

And he's also moving to a league where he can DH frequently, and he'll be under contract when the turf is gone.

He would get a retarded amount of money, but the question isn't what he'd get, but what you'd be comfortable giving him. I wouldn't pay him more than the 5/100 we just got him for.

Probably close to $25M per year for 5 or 6 years, definitely more than the $20M he's making now (less than $20M averaged over the remainder of the deal in fact).
