Smokey Verified Member Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 This is Donaldson's third season of being a MVP caliber player. I don't think it was random or a huge improvement in results. He just has a bigger track record now. Why shouldn't AA stay for 4 more years? He's done exactly what ownership and the executives wanted. He's made huge trades. He's signed some big free agents. He's rebuilt the farm system twice now. He absolutely should be back for 4 more years. They need a new president but AA gets stuff done and that's what you want from a GM. Record as the GM --> 440-456 (his best year so far has been the 2010 team which he adopted) Record since declaring the team all-in --> 201-209 I really can't understand why such a genius is still a lame duck GM. He's done EXACTLY what's been asked of him and he ABSOLUTELY should be extended forever!!!
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Ownership and the executives wanted the Blue Jays to make the playoffs, not just make some flashy moves. Many of them are working out and AA has a knack for negotiation, but his decision-making hasn't been flawless and the team hasn't been in contention late in the season in his five seasons at the helm previous to this year. In those five seasons, the other four teams in the AL East have each won the division. AA has built some good teams and he's not necessarily at fault for the failures, but I don't think it's clear that he "absolutely should be back for four more years." Ownership wanted the flashy moves, they wanted the hype and marketing opportunities associated with the deals. AA made decent deals at the time that didn't pan out do to injuries. Sure he's made some poor trades (RA Dickey) but for the most part the team has improved it's situation every year he's been here and in my opinion he's seemed to learn from his mistakes. That's what you want in a GM.
Smokey Verified Member Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Ownership wanted the flashy moves, they wanted the hype and marketing opportunities associated with the deals. So what you're saying is that winning isn't a priority for the ownership and that you fully support a puppet GM who did EXACTLY what was needed to deceive the idiot fans?
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 No I'm saying AA made some bold moves to try and get the club where it wanted to be (the playoffs). They didn't pan out but the club is in a better position now than when he took over. I'm also very excited for the lineup and young pitchers going forward.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 nice start by Dickey. giving the team some much needed innings today and a chance to win.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 nice start by Dickey. giving the team some much needed innings today and a chance to win. Too bad Gibby did not do the same
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Too bad Gibby did not do the same Gibby's fault the team scores 0 runs?
LTR Verified Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Gibby's fault the team scores 0 runs? Well... if he's not putting the optimal line-up/match-up out at every given opportunity, yes, partially.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Gibby's fault the team scores 0 runs? shark was good today. Joey bats is struggling. wondering if it's the shoulder still/again. Ed has not been doing much so a day off is probably good. Dickey had a good start for being Dickey.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Well... if he's not putting the optimal line-up/match-up out at every given opportunity, yes, partially. No manger does this.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Well... if he's not putting the optimal line-up/match-up out at every given opportunity, yes, partially. Agreed, plus Edwin or Reyes could have pinch hit in late innings especially in only a 2 run game
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Agreed, plus Edwin or Reyes could have pinch hit in late innings especially in only a 2 run game 9th it was Travis, JD and Joey.... no one to hit for. You dont want to bring Reyes in late, defense... and Smoak is just as good of a chance to hit as ed at this point. Shark just beat us. tip your hat.
LTR Verified Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 No manger does this. That's a simplistic response. Today's line-up was significantly degraded because of Gibbons.

No reason for Navarro and Goins to hit in the 8th, we were not winning or tied we needed offense
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Well... if he's not putting the optimal line-up/match-up out at every given opportunity, yes, partially. you realize it's a 162 game season right? and that there's a game almost every day ... and that it's not a video game ... and that everyday guys have aches 'n pains and it's best for the team that they be rested occasionally, right?

Starting Sunday everyone gets 4 days off that missed today's game

There are optimal times to rest players and not rest players. Gibbons chooses to do it more frequently then other managers. There was especially no reason to rest Edwin, we all know he just wanted to get Navarro in the line-up. Martin's been rested too much for the same reason.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Starting Sunday everyone gets 4 days off that missed today's game ok, so check every manager's lineup from today to Sunday and they (other than Gibby) will use your logic and not sit out any regulars, right?
LTR Verified Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 The All Star break is in 4 days... no players should have been rested today when they're all going to get 4 days anyway.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 ok, so check every manager's lineup from today to Sunday and they (other than Gibby) will use your logic and not sit out any regulars, right? They won't sit 2 of the best players in your lineup vs the worst record in the AL

Maybe Edwin had a blister on his thumb, or the flu, or slept wrong on his neck, or had a migrain,or any number of other things that could have kept him out today. These are people. They miss work. The fans aren't always told why.

I find it really hard to believe any manager would do anything else.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 According to Gibby not a thing wrong with them. Just wanted to give them a day off. That's a perfectly valid reason to give reporters for giving someone a day off for one of the 11ty reasons why a professional athlete might require a day off.

If he thinks Edwin needed a day off, it's absurd for a fan to think he knows better.

If he thinks Edwin needed a day off, it's absurd for a fan to think he knows better. I think Joey needs time off too, but our OF D is Pillar and no one else if Bats can't play. We really need Pompey back whether he can hit or not. I dont think that will happen because AA doesn't want to lose either colabello or Valenica. one of them has to go if they bring Pompey up.
