RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 James Shields makes too much sense for this team. Him and his prorated 10M contract should easily be taken on by Rogers as Dinger talked about earlier. Having a formidable 1-2 punch in Price and Shields would be huge down the stretch. It would give the Jays a very real chance at going deep into the post season without having to rely on out slugging teams in order to win. He replaces Buehrle on a short term contract and adds the innings this staff will so desperately need in 2016. When we claim Shields SD will pull him back and ask for assets in return.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 When we claim Shields SD will pull him back and ask for assets in return. As North eluded to earlier, he'll likely pass waivers and SD will be open to moving him for salary relief. Their motivation to move him will be apparent depending on what type of prospect(s) they target coming back if it's not strictly a salary dump. Thanks for the inside info though, Robert.

I disagree I don't think he will pass through waivers. If it as just the matter if Salary dump they would have moved him at the deadline. He will get claimed very easily. Adding Shields will at least cost one of Pompey or Alford.

I'd be okay with that, now that we have Revere long term, as long as there was some salary relief. I don't think the Jays make this move unless there is salary relief. Like $5M a year after 2014. OTOH, Stroman *may* be able to replace Hutch in the rotation come September, and he should be as good as Shields, since he is not coming back from arm problems.

jayswin11 Verified Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 I would love if they added Shields but can't see it happening due to money. I know it's a slim chance but that would also hurt our chances of resigning Price. I think the Jays could potentially offer the 7 year $210 million it would take. Not paying Buehrle/Dickey next year covers that. EE and JB cone off the books the following year. We still have a solid core going into 2017. A 1-2 punch of Price/Stroman would be so nice going into 2016 to go with the lineup we have. Not sure who 3-5 would be but some combo of Hutch, Sanchez, Osuna, and cheap FA pickups might be enough to get by.

Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 No cola but navarro is in the lineup.
baubau Verified Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 No cola but navarro is in the lineup. Smoak is in, no Martin. Likely as he hasn't been so hot after catching Dickey and speaking of Dickey, is going to be catching him tomorrow. Makes sense.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 I have no problems with Navarro being in the line-up lately considering how banged up Martin is.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 No cola but navarro is in the lineup. People better not be complaining. I want Martin catching Dickey and Price in NY so its best to give him the day off.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Pillar above Goins when Goins is on a hot streak? Hot streak doesn't really mean anything in the long run. He could return to being Ryan Goins at any point.
