GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 I think this confirms your identity - welcome to he board Kevin Barker....we hate your accent. I guess we better throw in Navarro and any other s*** player we don't want to increase the value of the trade. Thats how trades work right, you keep piling up more and more s*** and that means its worth more.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Shields pls Free agent last offseason. Cashner, Mateo and Queakkbbdhd
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 So what do we think the price is for Samardzja? He would be my favourite target if the cost isn't a Norris or Hoffman. Im not a huge fan of the Padres pitchers.

baubau Verified Member Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Shields pls Why would you want Shields? He is steadily declining, has a pretty albatross contract which won't help in keeping Bau/EE and could pull a Verlander (sudden decline) with all his IP.

So give me the workhorse who's pitched 200 IP every year since 2007. Funny you say he's declining. 3.29 SIERA and a 13.4% (!) Whiff rate. He's having a pretty much career year.

CrackerJack Verified Member Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 If Smoak is now officially the starting 1B against rhp, then good job Gibby. It took you three and a half months, but you figured out who your best 1B option is. so that means ... during those 6 weeks when Bautista couldn't play the OF, you would've sat either Jose or Edwin for Smoak ... interesting.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 He's signing for 4 more years? I don't want him First the board wants control, now they want short term, I'll just take a goat thanks.

So far, his HR/FB rate is a at a career high and likely a anomaly so his other peripherals may look better by seasons end. The biggest concern is those 200 IP since 2007. He could certainly be a exception like Burly! but my fear is him breaking down and the team having a large contract limiting the Jays from keeping other players. It feels like a RA Dickey type move as you'll have to give up at least a Norris and Pompey to get him with a Reyes-like player and decline heading into the final 2 seasons. If this team also isn't inclined to taking on a large contract, I would still keep the prospects, aim for someone cheaper to help the push into the offseason and spend the $20 on a UFA like a Samardzija, Price, Zimmermann, Kazmir, Fister, Cueto, Kennedy, Iwakuma, etc. To me the cost of Shields, the future of Shields (my own bias opinion ) and the other opportunities available in UFA make him a pass. E: Also, I know there is no promise a UFA would come here. So if Shields is still on the table and you miss out on the UFAs trade for him or someone else using Norris/Pompey in the offseason.

The fear of a pitcher breaking down is always present, though. What difference does it make if you trade for Sonny Gray and his arm explodes versus Shields? I also don't think you give up a Norris for Shields on an FA contract with a high ERA. He's probably a $10m asset. And he's the exact opposite of Reyes, to be honest with you. He's probably a better Buehrle. Not an outrageous cost (he's not an "ace") and he's on an FA contract, but it's still good value. Just like with Bark Muehrle.

baubau Verified Member Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 First the board wants control, now they want short term, I'll just take a goat thanks. Look, all I want is a ambidextrous pitcher who is Kershaw from the left side, Halladay from the right, can hit like Bonds and run like Henderson, be 20-22 years of age with a 15 year team friendly contract. Is that so hard?

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Its been posted on this board a million times. Yet I can't find it lol Sorry Jonn, if I had it I'd give it to ya.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 If the Jays could get Shields for nothing and just absorb his salary, I'd do it. His contract sucks (he ain't opting out at age 35 unless he really hates Canada) so you're looking at 3/65 for him in his mid-30's. That's a pretty big investment. I wouldn't give up actual talent for him, but if you can get him without giving up anything of value, then go for it. Assets > money. Not to Rogers maybe, but no more giving up top prospects for vets.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 A starter for a reliever? I'd need Holland and Davis in return for Dickey. Why ? ? ?

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Does Gibbons think Sonny Gray is left-handed? Why the hell are Valencia and Lolabello playing? Sonny Gray has weaker splits vs. right handers. That's why all the righties. May not need much anyway, considering how poor the A's are vs. lefties, and Vogt regressing hard (2-13 so far in the 2nd half, .192 in July.)
