They've done well there in the past and do you want to lose a higher pick over a small amount like $500k?

They already know what the guys we've drafted will sign for. If its going to take an extra $500K, then sure, they'll account for that and save some money. The whole "punt all the picks" approach? Won't happen. You guys act like we do that every year when we've literally only done it once, and it was a special scenario (an absurd amount of high picks).

By the way, you know how many big over-slot guys we signed after the 10th round last year? Zero. Like I said, its a pipe dream. When we landed Tellez and Brentz it was because we blew our first pick in Bickford.

They have an idea of what they will sign for but they have no budget this year and they went after two HS pitchers with a lot of leverage. It would be prudent to make sure they have some extra $ just in case they need it.

No reason to save money if you don't have the intention of spending it.

So its fair to assume that either the Jays or Brewers will nab Tristan Pompey somewhere in this draft?

Thats why they look into signability extensively. They've been on Singer and Maese forever. Maese will not be a hard sign, hence why he's already come out stating that he plans on signing. Singer appears a safe bet to sign as well otherwise he wouldn't have been drafted.

You can spend money you save you can't spend money you don't have. That's reason enough.

That's the point... they still picked a ton of premium talent in 11-40 in last year's draft, but because they signed their top picks, they didn't need to go after them. The Jays have always done this, go after premium, tough-signability guys as a fallback for when you don't sign your top picks. They picked up Norris and Comer when they missed Beede, they picked up Brentz and Tellez when they missed on Bickford, and while I'm not sure if this is accurate because I wasn't following the Jays back then, I think someone mentioned the other day that they picked up Hutchison when they missed on Paxton.

Didn't they punt picks on college seniors in the first ten rounds even last year?

Yes they got Brentz and Tellez because they saved money to offer Bickford over slot and when he didn't sign they had enough for Brentz, Tellez and Heidt.

They look in to signability every draft and every draft they don't sign people. It's not a guarantee and it's past the point in the draft where they are passing on big talent.

Every team drafts HS guys who fall after the 10th round. All those guys you mentioned were drafted long before any of those players chose not to sign.

They'll do the same this year because no one expects to sign 40 rounds worth of guys, but that doesn't mean we're going to be punting picks away.

Ang, can you translate

"Throws 88 mph. The ball moves a lot. Forces hitters to swing often and has the ability to miss bats. Makes the opponent swing and miss a lot"

I think LD stands for lanzador, which would be pitcher.

88 mph for now. The ball have a great movement when he pitch, tons of swing-miss.

HS pitcher. Really punting those picks boys!

I don't think we'll know until we find out what he signs for. For what it's worth, I expect this pick to sign for well below slot, though obviously not for 5,000 or a hot dog.
