In the off-season we had 4 aging veterans who we could have said had sell off value

Dickey, Burly, Bautista, Encarnacion

Dickey and Burly now are pitching terrible, Bautista is hurt,

E5 who is not having a great year maybe the only asset that may bring decent prospects back

i see a 3 way with EE ending up with the Rays, pitching to Cubs, MILF to Jays

MILFS are my favorite.

if Edwin & Bautista get really hot for a month, and the Jays climb above .500 (and just a couple games back in the weak division), then the talk will switch to the Jays being buyers rather than sellers.

There really isn't any point in discussing said trades, as it simply won't happen. Rogers wouldn't allow the PR hit, nor will they let Alex sell.

Rays can't afford to take on EE's contract, and are more likely to be major sellers at the deadline as the team is likely to regress by July, and ownership will likely push for more salary cuts on the Rays, especially with the near non-existent attendance, especially if they want to send a message that they NEED a new stadium, they'll start selling off stars if the city of St. Pete refuses to help in building a new stadium. Do I even need to talk about what happened with the Expos?

Cubs are more likely to go after someone like Hamels..

They were LEADING the second wild card at the trade deadline last season and did nothing to add to the team. Rogers spent months in the off-season trying to hire a GM to take over as team president (Duquette), who was surely going to fire AA at some point.

Rogers isn't going to spend more on this team, not with Alex in charge. They don't even want him (or Beeston) around. That's also the reason they probably won't approve a Bautista or Edwin trade. There is no point letting someone you want to get rid of dictate the direction that the next GM takes. The job will be appealing to GM candidates with Bautista/Edwin still there to trade (or keep for one more season).

I don't think anybody is saying Rogers is going to spend more on the team this year with Alex in charge.

Apparently, Alex maxed out the budget and left no wiggle room at the deadline last season.

If the budget is simply the same as last season, then (correct me if i'm wrong) Alex still has something left in the piggybank and will be able to afford a 2 month rental at the trade deadline (if the Jays are in contention at that time.)

They won't be traded until the off-season. AA won't be allowed to move them.

That makes sense. The new GM would be in a better position to rebuild the team. Bautista & EE may prefer to sign long term contracts with other franchises.

If what you say in your 2nd paragraph is true, then Rogers is dumber than I thought. Why throw away a whole year when they could've made the changes in the off season? Surely, Williams (who was their first choice, don't forget that) and Duquette aren't the best possible choices out there.

Rogers being dumb isn't news. They tampered to try to hire a new team president after asking a rival exec for guidance. Clearly they are not bright.

I didn't say it was news, just that they could be dumber than we think. Their first choice was Williams, so for those praying AA gets fired ASAP, it could get worse although he has won a WS you know.

Here's Sherman's article on trading either of them

http://nypost.com/2015/05/19/why-blue-jays-should-be-trying-to-deal-bautista-or-encarnacion/

He makes a good point that E5 is going to gain 10-5 rights in July. So if there is to be a deal, it will be made within 6-7 weeks.

"Positively, Encarnacion could be sold as a first baseman, left fielder or right fielder (the same as Bautista, when healthy) and he would be the best hitter available."

ummmm ....what?

Well if Hanley Ramirez is considered a LF, E5 can be too.

But I guess that limits the market for him. Houston is the closest thing to the green monster..

That's a logical piece although I cant see Edwin in the OF at all. He has been babying his hamstring all season running nothing out after missing the last part of 2014.

I just don't see the rush even with the Edwin 10-5 issue. Jose's injury and their production being down negates some value. They aren't out of it although lately it seems rather hopeless. On the flip side it depends what comes back for arm(s) to do it now. I agree with him that I don't see them resigning them...the FA market premium is just too $ and hard for them to pass up. Which is why we let Melky go and had to pay so much for Martin. Not that 2 year extensions would be a bad idea at all.

Agree with Spanky the PR spin would be a challenge dealing them - but its doable for the right deal and if it shows up positively in the results. AA's last big gamble. I don't see it as impossible.

But even if we trade either one, what can that bring us back? I can't see us getting something meaningful to help us compete. I don't expect any team to trade a #1 or #2 for Edwin.

Nor do I think a few #3's is expendable. We'd only get guys that are prospect worthy, which is more of a rebuild..

Agree. That's THE issue. We made some "win now" moves but I don't see any "win now" pieces coming back off setting the loss (es). Rogers stopped short on a win now payroll for the team (after some choices were made that cost them a lot - $55+mm for Reyes, RA and Mark B) to add arms (if they would have come) and we are now half pregnant.

This is a dumb article. Who exactly is going to be giving up good pitching for older star hitters? Given their age, a team acquiring Bautista or EE is obviously in win now mode. So why would they deal off their big league team?

If a deal is going to happen it's either we deal prospects for pitching or we are dealing Bautista and EE for prospects.

Fair point but not necessarily. A team can be in "win now" but it depends on if they have more quality pitching (and prospects) than they need now and not enough offense (and they think they can maybe resign beyond end 2016).

I don't know who that team is now. I don't think they exist.

Our Jays teams that won definitely weren't built around stud pitching.

Good. New York media is likely getting desperate because the Mets have stumbled due to lack of offense, and the Yankees just lost Ellsbury for an undetermined period due to a leg injury..

And we all know that no GM in any sport has ever traded a player (s) after saying something like that...

I'd trade either for Syndergard +. Mets are stacked with young pitching and a big bat might put them in a position to make some noise this year.

This is good news. I agree that they are unlikely to get back good talent for them. Keep them & make one final push for a playoff spot in 2016.

I hope Rogers doesn't trade them as an excuse to cut payroll.
