If only the US had a black leader in a position of prominence that could help quell the violence like MLK did.

Malcolm Gladwell wrote a fascinating book called "David & Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants", where he touches on MLK and the Birmingham Children's Crusade, and the tactics (some of them, ethically questionable) used by MLK to try to gain support for his movement. While MLK might have preached non violence, he also recognized that the violence being used against blacks could be used as a way shocking white America out of its apathy towards them. While watching CNN, a young man said something along the lines of "maybe we're going the wrong way about it, but at least people are paying attention". And that's the thing, a silent protest probably won't do anything. The sad thing is, people are hurting themselves just out of this desperation. But would we even be talking this if there wasn't rioting? I think that must feel frustrating, to have people who didn't know or care about you, who have an entirely different life experience, suddenly scold you for your actions.

I don't get why they just don't play in the Trop normally with the Rays home and in the next series vs. the O's at home gets switched to Camden yards

Because that would be an unfair to the Rays.

The mayor of baltimore is a black female. It won't make a difference, these are people who are just looking for a reason to steal, protest, destroy and cause damage. The mayor also is not giving enough directive in terms of containing this and trying to speak out to the hooligans. But, regardless, I doubt any speech will have any impact on what is happening. 140+ cars torched, dozens of businesses looted and/or damaged, 19+ buildings sustaining structural damage, 15+ police officers injured.

Good job Baltimore, I'm sure a lot of people will look to move there with their families when this is done, lol...

A female what?

Yup. Hate the O's but just gained a lot of respect for John Angelos after that statement, he easily could've said nothing or maybe have just said what you'd expect a typical wealthy 1%er to say but he didn't. He made a thoughtful (although maybe unpopular & controversial) statement that raised awareness about some serious problems in the states right now. Kudos to him.

Props to the mother who slapped her kid all the way home. More parents should have been out there slapping their kids home.

Wonder how long it will take before some left wing nut case tries to charge that mother with child abuse or assault. you know it's gonna happen.

Interesting how Showalter isnt complaining about having to play with cars burning outside the stadium but some artificial grass is so dangerous that he has to write MLB.

I don't understand why they don't move it to another stadium, rather than play with no one in the stands.

I damn near almost got hit by a police bus during the g20 riots. A cop was telling people to move back, and I guess I hadn't moved back far enough as I felt a hand pull me back. It was another cop, and the bus flew past me, around the corner to the police HQ.

this is how society has always worked. A smaller group does as they please until there are enough people who have nothing to lose and then there is revolution. I'm surprised it has taken this long to start, but I doubt it will end soon. A larger uprising will come when the balance of wealth tips a little bit more against the middle class. In America the middle class is not far from losing everything. A sudden spike in the interest rates and a drop in the dollar and millions will lose everything.

the people with power make an adjustment and give just enough to stop the uprising and then the cycle begins again. the people who are actually in control will never give up control.

Looks like the word 'thug' has now been claimed to be racist

http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/29/us/baltimore-riots-thug-n-word/index.html

Pretty funny how words over time get 'claimed'. I remember 10-15 years ago I could call someone a 'faggot' and not have anyone flash an eye. But in the past 5 years it's been used as a homophobic slur.

Just watch 5 years now... '****' or 'scrub' gets taken as a slur.

This isn't a word I throw around lightly.

Did anyone hear Machado's locker room comments after the game? He said, and I'm paraphrasing...."First time in history that it's ever happened and it was really cool to have the chance to be a part of it."

Does he have any clue as to why they played in an empty house?
