IBTrini Verified Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 According to StatCast, Pompey's mean route efficiency in the centre field is 98.14% whereas Kevin Pillar's median route efficiency in the left field is 98.26 but Pompey edges him in top speed and closing speed by close to two knots and his legs are about 4.67 cm longer in length although Pillar has girthier thighs by about 2 inches around FWIW but on the contrary to that Pillar is hotter than him defensively by about 2.6 degrees Kelvin right now so really it's anybody's game that's all I'm trying to say is what the stats say. I think "StatCast" falls short of its mark!!! Facial hairs should play a big part in the overall analysis and that may have been conveniently left out.
IBTrini Verified Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 No. Pillar is a very good 4th OF. Pillar's OPS is .631 right now (.636 career). He has made some spectacular plays...but has made some mistakes as well. Let's be thankful that he held the fort down while Saunders was hurt, but not fall in love with him and make him more than he really is. Reminds me of Reed Johnson...Was a great 4th OF, but people kept wanting to make him a regular. I agree with this also.
IBTrini Verified Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Pillar, Pompey, Saunders can play all 3 OF positions Bautista can be RF, 1B, DH, 3B EE 1B, DH, and 3B or LF in a pinch Smoak 1B or DH A lot of flexibility here, 6 players/5 positions = 162 * 5/6 = 135 games each Go by pitching matchups and keep them rested, keep them fresh Not sure I can handle Encarnacion at 3B or LF even in a pinch - too scary.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 He's a 4th OFer guys. A good one. Why do we need 2 pages to come to this conclusion?

By saying LF in a pinch and adding it as a weighted position in your calculation you are presuming all 3 players can play it (same with RF), let alone the fact that EE will not see 1 game at LF. Also putting Bautista at 1B to remove Smoak for Pillar is a defensive collapse. There isn't a pitching match up that would suggest we should move those players around all positions on the diamond as as + move.

The Jays *could* have defensive flexibility but the quality of the defense would be shot. I wouldn't want Bautista or Encarnacion at 3B any more than I would want Pompey or Martin there. Actually I'd prefer Martin to be there in a bind assuming he's not behind the plate.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 UZR is in! Pillar is 10th among outfielders at 2.4 runs: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=of&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=y&type=1&season=2015&month=0&season1=2015&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=23,d
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 How about Handsome Jake already at 1.1 WAR. The trade that keeps on giving... Marisnick + Hech + DeSclafani = 2.6 fWAR, all making peanuts. Reyes + Beuhrle = 0.2 fWAR, making 40 million dollars.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 I'm really hoping Bautista either can play RF or we can DL him and bring someone up as Pillar playing everyday is not a pretty site. He's a fine 4th OF and someone you don't mind playing 60-70 games a season but not someone you'd want 130+ out of.

Hipfan Verified Member Posted July 30, 2016 Posted July 30, 2016 Bump cause it's MF Friday night I totally started reading the beginning of this thread, thinking it was new, and asking myself "why are we discussing Pompey vs. Pillar?" Thanks! Note to self: check the post date...
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2016 Posted July 30, 2016 What?????????? Have you seen his past 2 season??? What's with your guys fascination with Pompey????? Why should he have the right to dethrone Pillar??? Pompey can take the glove and head to the corner, if he even gets the chance to play up here. Right now he's 5th on the depth charts he should even be a topic of conversation Edit: derp this was bumped from 2015
