baloojayz Verified Member Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Good for him for not waiting for the numbers to go look ugly before calling it quits (if he decides). What a career he has made!
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Seems like he could pitch forever, but it would be cool to see him walk away after another 3.8 ERA, 200 IP season. I'd rather not see Burhrle become one of those guys who struggles to hang on years after his peak. One of my favourites ever.

Go out on Mike Mussina high, I don't blame guys who stay too long but it it sad to see. Cliff Lee should give it up and leave with a reputation as a stud

Lee should call it quits before he becomes a guy that was dominate for a few seasons and then became just meh.

I think he wants to pitch because he wants the hall of fame but his superstar reign was too late and too short unfortunately (he is the bautista of starting pitching and bautista is the Lee of hitters)

Two players who are among the best players in the game but were late bloomers. Lee just is more unfortunate because he can't seem to stay healthy. If I had to pick which player was more likely to get into the Hall of Fame it would be Bautista though. Unless he starts getting hurt frequently, or his production drastically drops off the face of the earth, he should at least get some consideration. With the time that Lee missed, I don't think he'll get much.
Travis_Snider Verified Member Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 He made an interesting comment on opening day when the players were interviewed and asked what would you do if you were mlb commissioner for a year. Buehrle said he would make the season 2 weeks long. Seems like he is tired of the grind lol He is still solid as f*** though
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 He's still a very valuable piece and he will get offered a deal somewhere. question is if he has the heart to do another year and make 20+ million more. If the right deal came up he would probably do it. A team closer to Florida that has a top chance of post season play and no silly dog laws.... he might, but I doubt he wants to be in Canada again next year
Inklink Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Retiring from baseball and becoming a dog breeder or something. Just kidding, great career. Hope he goes out with a World Series.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2015 Author Posted April 19, 2015 I would like to give Buehrle a chance to get a save before he retires lol.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 If true, I hope the Jays either make the playoffs, or trade him to a contender in July/August if they don't. He's one of my favorites as well. Very rare to see such a consistent pitcher in this era. Hope he sticks around with the Jays beyond 2015, but I guess if he's calling it quits, at least he'd be leaving while still on the top of his game.

CanuckofChicago Verified Member Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 I would hate for Buerhle to retire. Maybe the White Sox sign him to a one year deal, that would be great. It is funny though, how the fanbase really criticized Buerhle in his first year and even wanting to get rid of him last year, but now everyone loves him and is saddened by the reports that he could retire.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/roy-halladay-deserving-hall-of-famer-to-retire/ Lol @ Halladay "not even close" to being a hall of famer. What world do you live in? He was talking about Bautista and Lee. Not sure where you got Halladay.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Boxy is dumb and can't read. Very true, but at least I don't cheat people in fantasy baseball like some kind of weasel.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 I don't see Jose Bautista or Cliff Lee getting any serious consideration for the HofF. Bautista is 34, though he'd have to stay healthy over the next 5-6 seasons and continue to play at an elite level until he's 40. Also, probably need to throw in a World Series or two.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Bautista career started too late
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Bautista career started too late David Ortiz started to become a stud in 2003, so at the age of 27-28. Bautista at the age of 29. Only chance Bautista gets any serious consideration if he plays at an elite level until his 40's and wins a World Series or two with the Blue Jays.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2015 Author Posted April 19, 2015 Why? Because that one stat on his bref page with "0" bugs me lol
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 A reality check for those who think Bautista has a chance at the HOF. Fred McGriff had 493 HR and 57 WAR and is getting 10-15% support. Bautista has 249 HR and 28 WAR to date. So even if the guy has five straight 50 HR 5+ WAR seasons he's a fringe candidate. As in other words it's not happening under the most positive of circumstances unless he magically turns into a clean Barry Bonds for 6 years. Ortiz should not get a whiff either, and it would be a travesty to McGriff if he does. For Cliff Lee supporters, look to David Wells as a pretty good comparable if he pitches effectively for the next 3-4 years. He didn't even make the 5% cutoff in his first year of eligibility. Buehrle has a better chance and looks like he's got more left in the tank than Cliff Lee.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Halladay should also be a no-brainer though Kenny Lofton fell off after his first year with a similar career WAR so who knows what those idiot voters will do. He'll probably get in after 3 or 4 tries. His playoff no-hitter helps but what I think is his greatest asset is his dominant winning percentage. He won twice as many games as he lost which plays well with the old school crowd and should get credit with the new school crowd considering he did that playing for some very mediocre teams.

I don't think that is a widely (or even semi-widely) held opinion here.

Mcgriff and Bautista played in very different eras A large part of Mcgriff's era, everyone was hitting 30-40 homeruns, it wasn't anything special. Juiced Balls, Juiced Players Bautista has had 5 good years at the MLB level, he led the MLB in homeruns 2 years and for 2 he was leading the league in homeruns before he got hurt. If Bautista had 5 straight 50 Homerun seasons he would be first ballot. Not saying that Bautista has a chance, he doens't his career started too late. Mcgriff in his era wasn't that special, and not the same level of player as Bautista
