KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 So I wouldn't take any real issues with how Toronto handled Sanchez or Norris. I don't really get it either though. They must think there's some sort of benefit to getting initial MLB exposure out of the way.

September is a better evaluation time than Spring Training, if you're already looking ahead and considering giving a rookie a role out of the gate next year. Dalton Pompey might have won the CF last year. He looked like he belonged in the big leagues, took Felix into the 2nd deck at Rogers Centre, etc.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 MLB clocks don't count sept callups. I'm not sure why you think this, but service time definitely accrues for September call ups. They just don't have to be added to the 25 man roster.
Gorlak Verified Member Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Hes not going to be delayed so people need to stop talking about it. I have been waiting all Spring for Alex to shut up Gibbons about Castro but its not going to happen. AA is the one who hyped Castro up, Gibbons just knows he's losing Sanchez in the pen so he is just happy he gets a replacement.
Gorlak Verified Member Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 I expect the non EE half of the 1st/DH platoon will likely be replacement. Smoak could get some RBI's and dingers, but will still likely be replacement. If you don't play EE at 1st you can't use good hitters at DH when they need a day off, otherwise the Jays will need to give 400 PA to Barton/Smoak/Navarro. It is by far the teams weakest position, could be one of the biggest black holes in the AL.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Have you seen our 2nd base options? What's wrong with Travis and Izzy?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Travis will be fine. You're also being quite dramatic on the whole black hole scenario.
Jayday Verified Member Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 You're also being quite dramatic on the whole black hole scenario. It's just racial preference.

closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 The real question is: Are we going with 3 catchers? If we are, that is obviously going to affect bench and bullpen depth and the platoon questions ie: what to do with Viceado and Tolleson come to the forefront. The short answer to the question of opening day starter is probably Smoak as we are playing the Yankees and Tanaka will probably start. If it is Sabathia, then Valencia.
Gorlak Verified Member Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 You're also being quite dramatic on the whole black hole scenario. A little bit, but there is a decent chance the Jays get negative WAR from those AB's.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 I really hope that Buck and Pat where sniffing paint fumes today when they said that the Jays want EE to play the bulk of innings at first. that would mean that they are planning on using Navarro as the DH. is the AA smoking crack?

Yeah when I heard that I threw up. Between that and referencing wins every time they mentioned a pitcher I already want them gone. We can all argue if Osuna/Castro deserve to be on the team or not but playing Navarro at DH and Edwin at 1B instead of Smoak at 1B would be making the team a lot worse than the upgrade in the bullpen. Really don't understand the benefit of playing Edwin at 1B. He has injury concerns already and hes terrible defensively.

SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Should trade for Ryan Howard. Phillies willing to eat $50M of his contract. Even last year with diminished skills he was 6th in RBI for 1B. He was a better run producer than batting champion Justin Morneau. More HR and RBI than Freddie Freeman who everybody seems to want to trade our best prospects for for some reason (never hit 25 HR, one 100 RBI season, no thanks). I saw that and thought the exact same thing. I think he bounces back and at that price what the hell.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 No, I think I was just wrong about sept callups not accruing service time. I was under the impression that being a Sept callup didn't start a players service clock but can't find anything to clarify it so i'm probably just wrong about that. Kinda makes calling up a player in Sept, that hasn't had his clock started, a bit of a stupid move. You have to battle test these kids at some point. Pompey showed he could belong as early at this season with his stint. If that didn't happen, Rasmus or Gose, or both, might still be Jays. Probably Gose. Then we don't have a young kid ready to assume 2B. It's not always black and white, that's for sure.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Buck and Pat still think Navarro had a fantastic year last year. their perception of the game is beyond homer quality, but they were insinuating that AA wanted this to be the choice for the year. if that is true it's sickeningly stupid
Gorlak Verified Member Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Smoak +1 wRC+ vs RHP and Valencia +20 wRC+ vs LHP could be very sexy. If Smoak has a career year he may be worth 1 WAR.
