and when Estrada has been to known to give up dingers by the handful as a starter.

As a starter, you can work around a propensity to give up homers by doing other things well and providing some length (see R.A. Dickey), that's harder to do as a reliever. It's not a good role for him and never was. If he doesn't cut it as a starter, he'll get cut and that's how it should be.

He could be the mop up man/long reliever and Redmond can get more of an 8th/7th inning role

I know your robo-brain is powerful, but I have a hard time thinking Sanchez will be as bad as many people seem to think. I'd go with Sanchez in the rotation 9 time out of 10 compared to Estrada.

Hes making 3.9 million this year he isn't getting cut.

 

I seem to recall something to the effect that he could be cut for a minimal cost but maybe that opportunity has passed. In any case, the salary may make it easier to clear him and option him to the minors. I would definitely prefer that then putting him in the bullpen where there are already a couple of long men in Hendriks and Redmond.

Well I think Estrada is better than most do here, and Sanchez obviously doesn't project well. It's really not even close to me.

 

Much like Smoak though, Estrada could fall victim to the small sample size game. Homerun rate over small sample sizes doesn't mean much but high homerun rate over a small sample size combined with a high one over a long sample last year, could spell trouble for him. Remember the Jays gave up on Jesse Chavez over far less than this.
